Urgent - need to buy a gateau - Reading area

Help! I need to buy a nice gateau this morning. Anywhere between West Reading and Bracknell. Not a Costco cake (some are awesome but they're not appropriate for the occasion).

Any suggestions? Is Patisserie Valerie worth trying? I've been disappointed with things from there in recent years, so I'm not sure I want to risk it for a whole cake.

Patisserie Valerie are awful I have been seduced by their beauty a few times and every single time cursed myself as they were utterly tasteless.
I can't suggest what you could get... But PV would be my absolute last resort.

There's these guys in the Broad St Mall in Reading. Other than them I can't think of anywhere that isn't a small business where you would need to order in advance.

Cake Box? I don't know the one in Reading, but cakes from other branches were good.

If by gateau you mean a large cake, then COOK do a carrot cake or chocolate cake (frozen but defrosts quickly)

Or if you want something really special, try Cake Box shop in Reading or Viktoria cakes on Oxford Road Reading

I'm after the sort of thing Patisserie V would have been perfect for 30y ago. Cream and fruit and chocolate lace and all sorts of fripperies.

Do you think she lied as well as being cynical? How can you be cynical anyway on a Customer Service helpline about cakes? Grin
