Anyone done it? Does it freeze well for say a couple of weeks?

Yes crab is perfect frozen!! Even dressed crab freezes beautifully.

great! So picked white meat from my fishmonger (who unhelpfully won't be open between xmas and new year) is fine if I go and buy now? Very keen to have some crab for starters at new year!

It will be completely fine frozen in its shell or in an airtight container - a lot of seafood is frozen at sea to keep it in top condition (using commercial flash freezers, which means you can re-freeze using a domestic freezer), unless it's off a day boat from the coast. You can ask your fishmonger about it, I'm sure they freeze crab all the time.
