Bring something Christmassy????

FiveShelties · 09/12/2023 08:27

We have been invited to friends for the evening and have been asked to bring something Christmassy to be part of a 'Grazing Table'. I cannot think of anything other than cheese/dips/crackers etc with a holly branch on the side!

If you can buy ready rolled pastry - filo works really well though puff will too - make a filling of chopped cooked chicken, cranberry sauce and creme fraiche, I add oregano, tarragon plus season with salt and pepper. Brush with melted butter then bake until golden, if using filo I use two sheets per parcel brushing melted butter in between. You can make a bi one or cut the pastry into individual portions

The best bit is it's just assembly, I buy the cooked chicken, the sauce, the pastry, herbs in garden...

@GetTheGoodLookingGuy

They sound amazing!

KatBurglar · 09/12/2023 09:45

Sprouts?

More seriously, a large square of puff pastry can be scored with a knife into little vol au vents dead easily. Then a spoonful of Stilton with broccoli, or ham and leeks, or smoked salmon with cream cheese and fresh dill in each.

Thank you so much everyone, my friends are going to be amazed - I am usually the one you can rely on to bring cheese, dips, crackers and olives!😁

Mini blinis with smoked salmon and cream cheese
Banana bread with Xmas design on top
Cheese and pineapple sticks(they actually always go down a treat 🤣)
Cocktail stick with cherry tomato, mozzarella ball and basil leaf on.
Warm salad (leafy greens, sweet potato cubes, green beans, feta cubes and pomegranate)
Homemade flapjacks/shortbread

You can make an awesome crown from croissant pastries—- overlap the triangles and fill in a ring. Then roll the points in to the middle.

If they are relying on you bringing that stuff then I wouldn't turn up with the weird jar thing. The reason these things are found on Pinterest is because their job is to look good. Presumably people will mostly want cheese, dips and crackers!

Thank you for the recipe, @GetTheGoodLookingGuy, I'm going to make these for Christmas!

ColourByNumbers88 · 09/12/2023 10:25

Noting for the ideas here.

I recently did little turkey and stuffing meatballs on cocktail sticks for a potluck type event and they disappeared before anything else. I did a huge platter/tray with one half in a spicy sticky cranberry glaze and kept the other half plain.

I also dip some mini Santa hat cheese cake bites which were a total cheat (shop bought cheesecake, cut with a cookie cutter topped with a strawberry and a little bit of whipped cream), looked great and they were easy 😅.

doubleshotcappuccino · 09/12/2023 11:40

@JamieKnows "weird jar thing " full of Christmas cheer over there aren't we ?!

i have to say i agree with @JamieKnows

It sounds as though it is going to look amazing

but a party, with 4 different cheeses, chocolate nuts and dried fruits contained in a jar… in layers… simply doesn’t work for a party! what happens if you fancy a bit of gouda but you have to wade though layers of other cheeses and nuts… and how do you even do it? take everything out and then shove it back in?

Isthisblocked · 09/12/2023 15:10

Anything at all you usually make but use a star or tree shaped cutter?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/12/2023 15:41

Smoked salmon blinis

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/12/2023 15:57

The jar thing sounds great! It’ll have the ‘wow’ of being a bit different, people who want just dried fruit or nuts would pick from a different bowl with just that in surely?

Its like saying don’t bring mince pies because if people just want pastry then it’ll taste of mincemeat

it is like putting mince pies in jar and then truffles, flapjack and chocolate brownies…. and interspersing with haribo and crisps! 😂 (my teen son’s dream actually!)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/12/2023 16:25

Do you get lebkuchen, stollen and/or panettone in NZ? Mini quiches?

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/12/2023 17:26

@contactus maybe it’s me that’s weird them. That sounds lovely! In fact I think m and s call it “munchie mix”

Yes we do have these, for some reason I was thinking it would have to be savoury - not sure why I thought that!

A Yule log (I was going to recommend the M&S colin one but then saw you lived in NZ!) or a Nutella Christmas tree

TheGriffle · 10/12/2023 08:11

I would def do cheese and pickled onions on sticks, stuck in an artful way. They are loved by all. And a Nutella tree so you’ve covered both sweet and savoury with little effort but they look impressive.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 10/12/2023 08:21

Feta and honey roasted figs

Brie and cranberry mini puff pastry's

Orange cranberry and cinnamon scones
