Where are all the chestnuts?

Artyfarty555 · 28/11/2023 22:43

I live in Lincolnshire and haven’t seen any fresh chestnuts in a little net bag to boil and shell for my Christmas stuffing. I usually buy from Asda or Sainsbury’s but not seen any. I asked today in Waitrose and was told they hadn’t had any in.
i have bought a couple of freeze dried bags of them but would prefer fresh.
Anyone seen any in a supermarket? Thanks

No I haven’t - I love chestnuts (I eat them raw)so have been keeping my eyes open but seen none. Ocado have some listed but the reviews are terrible, all seem to be mouldy. Maybe it’s the wet weather we had recently. I am missing my November treat so hope someone has a source.

Haven't even seen them at the Cmas markets
I love a bag to burn my mouth on

aswarmofmidges · 29/11/2023 08:08

I do t know if it's uk wet weather - don't most come from Italy and the like - so it would be the extreme heat and dry weather in the summer

YellowBelly23 · 29/11/2023 08:09

I bought 4 bags from Tesco at Cleethorpes last week. I love them and there weren't any the previous trip so I stocked up this time.

BaronessBomburst · 29/11/2023 08:10

I've not seen any. I have tinned and vacuum-packed.

minipie · 29/11/2023 08:11

Are they decent YellowBelly? Might take a trip to tesco if so

YellowBelly23 · 29/11/2023 08:11

I haven't started them. I also love them raw but they need to be dry to get the inner skin off easily so I usually put them near a radiator as I don't like them roasted.

If you're near me @Artyfarty555 I'm happy to share my stash

Darhon · 29/11/2023 08:12

M&S. in fact my partner bought a reduced bag home yesterday! So obviously they aren’t flying off the shelves

Everycompanyisafuckup · 29/11/2023 08:13

Yes, morrisons

YellowBelly23 · 29/11/2023 16:50

@minipie in the interests of quality control, I've just tried my first chestnut of the season.

Perfect in its raw state and just dry enough to peel the inner skin.

They may not last long now.

I got them from the big Tesco on Hewitt's Avenue at Cleethorpes

minipie · 29/11/2023 16:55

Thank you! I will try the big tesco near me

Artyfarty555 · 29/11/2023 17:01

@YellowBelly23 , how kind of your offer to share.. not far away either. But, today I bought a kilo loose from a market stall. Not sure what they will be like!? And, l did notice that M and S had bags in too. Plenty.
So, l shall cook these up with fingers crossed and if they aren’t great,I’ll get some from MnS.
Many thanks for all your replies.

Raw?
Mind blowing!

Don't they wreck your teeth?

minipie · 29/11/2023 20:11

No they’re quite soft. The tricky bit as Yellow says is cracking them at just the right time so they have dried out a tiny bit - enough that you can peel off the inner skin easily but not so much that they are dried up.

TheSpottedZebra · 29/11/2023 20:25

^ ooh, thanks. Im going to try that.
If I find some...

YellowBelly23 · 30/11/2023 08:31

@TheSpottedZebra I never liked the taste or texture of roasted chestnuts but since being knee high to a grasshopper I can polish of a bag of raw chestnuts in one sitting.

If they're over dry the texture of the raw nut is harder and not as nice to eat. If not dry enough I find as well as being hard to peel the inner skin, the peeling really makes the bit under my thumb nail sore after a while.

One word of caution, eating too many raw makes me windy and can upset my bowels but that's a price I'm willing to pay for the seasonal pleasure of fresh raw chestnuts.

YellowBelly23 · 30/11/2023 08:35

The other thing about chestnuts is that thing where you never know what's it's going to be like inside until you crack it.

I'm always so disappointed when the last one is bad inside and has to be thrown away, like cutting open an avocado and finding it's all black and mushy inside.

I do appreciate this is a very first world problem.

Grumpynan · 30/11/2023 08:38

I’ve seen them on the Tesco on line shopping but haven’t ordered any as I like to see them first

DH got some of the market last week, which were big fat and lovely hopefully get some more this week

YellowBelly23 · 01/12/2023 09:03

Any other Yellow Bellies local to Louth?

I saw these huge chestnuts at the fruit and veg shop between Argos and the Packhorse Pub.

Where are all the chestnuts?
Fifthtimelucky · 01/12/2023 09:13

I haven't seen any in the shops yet, but I picked up loads last month (from the ground) and they are currently stored in the garage, waiting for me to do something with them.

Going by our local trees, it's been a very good year for them. I don't remember ever having seen so many in previous years.

Nachtvlinder · 03/12/2023 19:22

I saw some in my local Sainsbury's the other day for £3. Does anyone know how to cook them in the airfryer? (I have a new Ninja Multi Cooker to test out!)
