I'm having people over for my birthday but don't want to make anything too faffy. Thought two pies (meat and veggie option ) might be nice with lovely mash and greens? Would you like that ? What pie recipes have you got, you wondrous people? Thank you 🙏

This is my 'go to' recipe for a meat pie filling. It's always complimented albeit it's not a fancy recipe.

For the veggie option I'd make a cottage pie rather than a pastry pie.

This recipe is good and a bit different but can easily be made in advance.

My only comment here is that the last time I made that vegetarian classic, homity pie, it collapsed as I was taking it out of the springform tin. It tasted lovely, but looked a mess.

Jamie Oliver turkey and leek pie. Designed with leftover Xmas turkey in mind but I just buy turkey breast from the supermarket.

That looks really good. Have you used a slow cooker for it? If so, how long for and at what heat?

The hairy bikers chicken pie is the best I've ever made.

@determinedtomakethiswork I haven't used the slow cooker but I imagine it would work just as well as simmering it.
You might just need to adjust the liquid slightly so it's not too thin.

Homity pie is delicious but potato-y so I wouldn’t do that with mash. How about two mash-topped pies with two green veg?

You could do v posh shepherds pie with proper lamb, and either fish or lentils in the other one depending on veggie / pescatarianness of guests

Drooling now. I'd be comfortable with a shortcrust but need to check if I have suitable pie dishes actually ! Chicken pie plus a veggie one is appealing but equally beef. I'll enjoy reading these thanks
