Hi all ☺️

daughter packed lunch is currently

  • dunker/lunchable
  • pepperoni
  • cheese string
  • fruit bag
  • crisp
  • treat (cake/biscuit etc)

I’m looking for some Non UPF swaps. I was thinking cooked chicken, babybel, fruit bag, cucumber, crisp and treat. Is there anything I can add to it? i saw eggs on a google search but don’t think her friends will appreciate that 😂😂😂

@BuffaloCauliflower I haven't, although now I am curious. Bakery bread definitely goes stale a lot quicker than supermarket bread though, which I had been taking as a sign that it was less processed.

Mine are adults now but used to enjoy a slice of fritatta with lunch, can use up any leftover veg in the fridge.

I also used to make like a wrap pizza thing, just dry fried in a warm frying pan with cheese and whatever, put another wrap on top, flip and warm through to melt the cheese and cut into slices.

@Hubblebubble Im in a Facebook group for people reducing UPF, and I’ve seen so many posts of people finding out the posh bakery bread they’ve been buying is full of dodgy ingredients

Do any of the big supermarkets stock the Crosta and Mollica range? I've not seen it in the ones I go to regularly.

It's honestly so easy to make your own bread. If you work or are very busy, buy a breadmaker. Takes 2 minutes to put it on and the bread is good and also cheap.

Sainsburys do and I think I've seen them in waitrose. We only eat low carb nowadays so I've not paid that much attention to the bread aisle.

Thanks, not seen them in Sainsbury's but haven't specifically looked, will have a look next time.

@harriettenightingale my Tesco stock some of the range. I think only Ocado stocks all their stuff, other supermarkets just a few

@BuffaloCauliflower thanks for the info. Trying to cut down on carbs generally but would like to find UPF free options for when we have fajitas etc.

PollyPeep · 21/11/2023 12:16

@harriettenightingale As I understand it, upf just means anything you wouldn't find in a home kitchen. You can make your own tortillas fairly easily using flour and oil. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/tortillas

Sauce could be tinned tomatoes, cumin, chilli powder and ground coriander. Then all the rest is non-upf anyway - chicken / beef / mushroom strips, grated cheese, lettuce, sour cream etc.

Tortillas recipe | BBC Good Food

Forget shop-bought and try homemade tortillas. They'll store for two days or you can freeze them to use later. They're perfect for wraps

Thanks for the info but I know how to make fajitas. It was the C&M bread products available to buy I was interested in. I'm fully aware of upfs and a reasonably good cook, and don't eat much processed food, but my veg fajitas are a really quick 15 min meal we have on busy days so don't want to make tortillas for this.

I think it's all a balancing act for most of us. We work, we raise children, we run households and let's face it, few of us ever really only do 50% even if we do have a partner.

Some swaps are easy, some are compromises between different dietary needs/wants and sometimes convenience has to win as the other choice is not being fed.

It's good if we can find "best" choices for those times when we just need to put food on the table.

Even when I was a child in the 70s, some meals would be home made from proper ingredients and other days we'd have tinned meatballs and instant whip for after.
