What cake shall I bake for myself?

I’ve decided to make myself a birthday cake next week. This isn’t a poor me. I like baking and it means I don’t need to factor in how much DH or DS will like it.
But what cake? I like most cakes except coffee cake.

Carrot cake is absolutely delicious and one of those "difficult to go wrong" cakes.

Lemon drizzle or a boiled fruit cake.

I know the PERFECT cake for you from what I'm reading from your posts. It's a bit different, it's a new cake to learn to make and it's a make ahead one so you're not baking on your birthday.

Try this one and let me know what you think! I love it and the last time I made it for the community cafe, people devoured it.

I spent ages choosing my cake on my last birthday. I went for chocolate orange in the end, but afterwards wished I'd picked something appley.

Apple and cinnamon: This is lovely.
As is this Mary Berry one here.

Mmm, apples.

Those orange and almond cakes where you boil the oranges whole are fantastic grown up cakes, and last really well (should you not manage to eat the whole cake in one day).

Nigel’s double ginger cake is different and lovely. It would go brilliantly with cream cheese icing.

This hazelnut cake is delicious, and gluten free - it’s a bit like an enormous hazelnut macaron.

The icing on this lemon cake is absolutely delicious. I am not an icing fan usually but this had me eating it by the spoonful (I did use a bit less sugar than the recipe which meant it was a bit sloppy for decorating but more tangy and grown up for eating).

Actually sod the cake, just make the lemon cream cheese icing and eat that.

There’s so many tasty suggestions here but I think it’s going to have to be a fancier lemon cake. Lemon drizzle is my first love cake-wise.

I love a polenta cake (orange or lemon).
