The best curry?

Hi! Please help!

Going out for a curry for DH birthday tomorrow, real rare treat so I'm very excited.

Can anyone recommend a curry I might like.

I'm after a mild curry that isn't sweet! I find korma and tikka masala too sweet.

Closest I've come to the savoury but mild flavour I'm after is butter chicken, but still slightly on the sweet side for me. Have googled and maybe balti would be a good one to try?

Curry experts please advise 😁😁😁

I really like a bhuna as it has the deep savoury taste of onions and tomatoes, but the heat level can really vary - maybe you can ask them to make a bhuna without so much chili? Dopiaza is similar with loads of onions for a savoury base.

If you like lentils you can get a tarka dal or a dal makhani. Or a dhansak which isn't sweet and isn't likely to be too spicy either.

My MIL isn't great with spice but likes a pasanda - that might also be too sweet for you in a restaurant (it's not sweet when made at home!)

I would suggest dopiaza as well or saag.

Or what about some kind of tandoori or tikka with gravy?

Dhansak is lovely, I like mild curry too but really enjoy the spinach one, pasanda... Can't remember name but lovely!

Saag isn't sweet. Do you like spinach?

Is it definitely restricted to Indian curries. I love Thai food- massaman or Penang are lovely

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 25/10/2023 18:24

Saag is definitely a good shout

Korma fits that description, but much depends on the restaurant they all do things differently, I would ask the waiter.

Dhansak is lovely but often quite hot, so maybe best to avoid. Bhuna and balti are usually not too hot. Saag is one of my favourites.

Thank you so much for all suggestions! I had a chicken bhuna it was absolutely spot on just what I was after.

Looking forward to trying the rest someday 😋😋😋
