Im going to bake a birthday cake this week - for Friday. I think chocolate would be best. I have a host student staying and she goes home a few days after her birthday & will celebrate once at home with her family. I don't want to let the occasion go without some token from here.

So have got her a keep sake bracelet and will make her favourite meal on Friday but want a surprise cake for afterwards

When she had chocolate cake from somewhere else recently, she really enjoyed it - so thus my thinking for her birthday cake?

Recipes please and any ideals for decorations?

Ive made plenty of cakes but never coated them in anything - but wanted to and try and pop something appropriate onto it

It's not chocolate cake but what about Ed Balls' birthday cake prize winning birthday cake recipe. I think he decorated it with chocolate and made it into a pirate ship

Lots of people asking.. so.. if you want to try the Double Cream Sponge cake: 350g sugar and 300ml double cream, creamed. Add 4 eggs. 1 tsp vanilla essence. 350g self-raising flour. Then into two greased and/lined tins at Fan 170 for 40 minutes.

BBC One - Celebrity Best Home Cook, Series 1, Episode 6, Ed Balls' unusual sponge recipe

There's intrigue when Ed uses double cream instead of butter to make his sponge.

I made this for my ds's birthday as he requested a chocolate cake. Just added some chocolate decorations.

This was ds's last year. Covered in ganache and then stuck chocolate fingers on and a selection of sweets on top

Thanks 🙏 any recipes for a moist chocolate cake? Should I go for oil rather than butter?

I make this, dead easy and very moist and fudgey. The chocolate ganache is easy to make and trowel on :)

dementedpixie. Thank you for linking before, I think I’d missed it with all the delicious photos of your cakes 🎂
