Thanksgiving

So as it comes around again we are going to an American friends for thanksgiving and everyone brings a dish.

I have a family member coming over from America next week - is there anything she could bring from the supermarket that would be traditional? I'm thinking seasonings or packet mixes?

I usually make creamed corn or green bean casserole.

Thanks!

I used to bring back tinned pumpkin pie filling, but since it’s heavy and now available in British supermarkets for about £1, I don’t bother anymore. Maybe ask for some candy corn to make a thanksgiving chex mix

Something like Stovetop turkey stuffing mix?

elp30 · 10/10/2023 13:25

@PatriciaHolm

No to "Stovetop Stuffing". It's not very nice.

OP, when I lived in England, I always wanted pecan pie for Thanksgiving so I'd ask for a large bag of pecans and corn syrup to make it.

Proper cranberry sauce in the tin! Also, if she has space, Libby's pumpkin pie filling in the tin.

If your British friends celebrating Thanksgiving are American or have lived in America, they will be tickled with this. The pumpkin pie filling is possible to find here, but expensive, but I've never seen the cranberry sauce and it's the one thing I really miss.

Otherwise, yes, to candy corn too. You don't really need to make anything with it, just bring it as a sweet treat.

@elp30 ! Ha, MIL does admit to not being a very good cook ;-)

Pecans are easy to get here though. DP does love the apple sauce you get in big plastic tubs, but that's a bit of a pain to carry. Also the very processed cranberry jelly that you slice!

DM brings back cornmeal for cornmeal muffins, candy corn and decorations (turkey paper napkins were a good one).

PatriciaHolm · 10/10/2023 13:33

@mindutopia this? DP is also a fan....

Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce, 14 Oz, 3 Pk : Amazon.co.uk: Grocery

Ooh thanks all, candy corn sounds a good shout and the jelly in a can!

Making your own cranberry jelly is super easy, only 3 ingredients.
cranberries, sugar, and water. Takes less than 10 minutes.

probably not something to be contributed to the Thanksgiving table, but I would be asking for some Sloppy Joes packet seasoning mixes.
