What on earth do I use it for? Some of it is about to go out of date.

Any good recipes you can recommend?

One of my favourites is prawn patia. I just Google random recipes if I’m making it, but tamarind is an essential ingredient.

I've got a block of tamarind but following the instructions to heat it and sieve it hasn't given me anywhere near the amount for the recipe. Any tips?

JustAMinutePleass · 29/09/2023 01:08

Make tons of Sambhar and freeze it?

Tamarind duck

Pad Thai

Also tamarind chutney is an essential part of many Indian chaat dishes.

Chaat- there's no set combos but look up ideas online, I use puffed rice, peanuts, chopped coriander, apple, and another crispy type or two. Serve with minted yogurt (add mint sauce to natural yogurt, such a cheat!) and tamarind dressing

Philomenacunk1 · 29/09/2023 07:10

I second Pad Thai!

You can make a very refreshing cold drink from it. Very sour without sugar.

Tamarind tart

toastofthetown · 29/09/2023 22:19

On chaat like this? I've only made this with the East version, which has chickpeas as well as roasted vegetables and it's one of mu favourite meals.

Carrot and tamarind soup, can't find the recipe I use but this is pretty close to it:

I add tamarind to lots of my cooking, chilli, stew, ragu I use as a, seasoning.

ButtonSister · 01/10/2023 08:38

Add it to satay sauce for an extra tang

This is really tasty. I use peppers instead of asparagus outside asparagus season. I'm sure you could replace the tofu with chicken or something of you're not veggie

I bet you can safely ignore the use by date for quite a while.

Thank you all for your great suggestions! I have one small jar, but the other two tubs are pretty large having been purchased in Asian and Middle Eastern shops. I have a LOT to get through.
Will be enough to try each recipe at least twice… 🙂
