What easy potato dish would you serve with this?

Tomorrow night I'm unexpectedly catering for 8 of us on holiday... and want a mellow day beforehand.

Im in Provence, so I'm thinking delicious filling starter of fish soup, rouille and croutons followed by roquefort/frisee/apple/walnut salad and then just fromage frais and chestnut puree.

That's plenty for me, but some younger sporty types involved so would like to include a hearty potato dish alongside the salad... perhaps something along the lines of baking a dish of potatoes with bacon/onions/something else. Not something I often cook so would love ideas and recipes!

Anything quick easy delicious and filling that goes with my planned menu.. What do you think?

Potato Dauphinoise?

Bananaandmarmite · 20/09/2023 10:51

I was going to say dauphinois too. It’s so easy to make and delish every time

Throwncrumbs · 20/09/2023 10:53

New potatoes boiled then chilled, chopped with added tuna, mayonnaise and chives is yummy

Bubbleandsqueak22 · 20/09/2023 10:55

Tartiflette https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/recipes/a44686809/tartiflette/

FallingAutumnLeaf · 20/09/2023 10:56

What about jacket potatoes?
It's quite a marmite dinner. Personally, I'd be starving, but that's fussiness rather than quantity.

GreenTuraco · 20/09/2023 10:57

Filled jacket potato skins - bake some spuds, halve them, scoop out most of the potato and mix in a bowl with things like cooked bacon bits, cheese, chives or spring onions, sour cream, sun-dried tomatoes. Pile back into the skins, top with grated cheese and bake again for 20 mins until done .

Roast baby potatoes for approx 20/25 mins in olive oil, then add rosemary sprigs and whole unpeeled garlic cloves and roast until potatoes are deep golden. Remove from oven and toss with lots of balsamic vinegar. Good warm or a room temperature

Whataretheodds · 20/09/2023 10:59

Dauphinoise or tartiflette is the obvious hearty potato dish, but the whole meal sounds a bit off-balance.

What about roast chicken with buttered new or boulangere potatoes and the salad you'd planned?

Prawns to start?

I agree jacket potatoes are filling and you could add grated cheese. I wouldn't like fish soup or the salad with nuts in.

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 20/09/2023 11:22

Wedges.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/09/2023 11:23

Salad and warm potatoes doesn't sound ideal to me. Have you got a bbq? Can you grill some chicken to go with the salad, could also make baby potato kebabs

Aposterhasnoname · 20/09/2023 11:24

Chips, and maybe a bit of fish. In batter. With mushy peas.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 20/09/2023 12:36

I'd do a potato salad with bacon running though it and a vinegarette rather than mayo dressing.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 20/09/2023 12:45

I'd do a chicken traybake as a main. Chicken thighs roasted with onions peppers and potatoes, herbs and garlic, then serrve that up with that delicious salad.

Lulubo1 · 20/09/2023 12:46

I love making this potato dish. It sounds worse than it tastes. It is always a hit when I serve it

Sounds delicious OP. (I'm assuming you know guests' dietary requirements.)

I'd probably do something like potatoes boulangère or maybe smashed garlic and rosemary new potatoes, but I wonder if a PP's suggestion of a roast chicken would be a good idea, to go along with the salad? Then I'd just do roasted or boiled new potatoes, maybe with butter and mint. IME rotisserie chickens in France are vastly superior to ones over here so you might not even have to cook it!

It sounds AMAZING! I often make a potato salad with a dressing made from a little.mayo, wholegrain mustard, and honey, sometimes thinned out with a tiny bit of cider vinegar. Then I stir through chopped chive just before serving.

Years ago as an au pair I used to watch the mother make a delicious endive salad by frying some lardons and adding them to a deep bowl with their fat. Then she'd crumble in Roquefort and then add the endive on top of that, and toss. It was cracking.

EggInANest · 20/09/2023 12:53

I'd do the salad as a starter, then fish soup (is it chunky?) with loads of gorgeous bread, then substantial cheese with biscuits / grapes, then the dessert. With macarons or nuts or something. So, no extra cooking.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 20/09/2023 12:55

LeClerc and the U have potato gratinée or sautéed with herbs on the counter. You are on holiday!

gogomoto · 20/09/2023 12:58

Dauphinois is perfect, you can cheat and buy them chilled in the supermarket if you prefer

loveyouradvice · 20/09/2023 13:19

Fab ideas ... yes, get that my menu is a bit eccentric ... may change the salad but probably not.... I always find that people are too full after hte fish soup to eat something significant like chicken etc ...

Leaning towards Dauphinois or the German hot salad which sounds great....

Or a posh Mac and cheese?

This sounds good. Proper bouillabaisse with rouille and croutons is super filling!

Patatas Panderas - foolproof and lighter than dauphinoise
