Anyone fancy doing a Jamie's 30 Minute Meal cook-a-long?

Well not so much a cook-a-long but we could cook something out of the book today and share pics/reviews.

I've had the book for a few years now but never actually cooked anything. I'm having a flick through and will tell you what I've chosen

Yes that sounds good, I’ve got that book and haven’t used it in ages.

Will have a look though Smile

I love Jamie’s recipes- the chicken stuffed with feta, basil, sundried tomatoes is from that book I think and it’s beautiful

BBno4 · 08/09/2023 08:51

I've picked the Moroccan Lamb Chops with flatbreads, herby couscous, stuffed peepers and pomegranate drink.

The filo pastry one looked really good as did the peri-peri chicken with Portuguese tarts!

I'm an excellent and experienced cook and I've never managed to do a Jamie recipe in the time he says! So be warned and give yourself an hour. Unless you have a team of sous-chefs off camera!

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2023 08:58

I have that book (somewhere, I’ve just done a house move and with 2 boxes to go it still hasn’t turned up…) and I remember some strange subs to make the recipe fit into 30 minutes. Like box custard to save 5 minutes of milk boiling, or supermarket chilled soup so the minutes could be spent on what were the two “real” dishes.
But yes, I’d love to share experiences with some cooking pals on MN.

BBno4 · 08/09/2023 09:40

I don't think I will try to do it in 30 min.

Especially in this weather!

I need to pop to the shop tomorrow but going to do the meringues with fruit and lemon curd thing tonight as we have the ingredients and it’s simple.

BBno4 · 08/09/2023 16:22

Omg. Just came back from the shops.

Jamie Oliver done me dirty!

The butcher wanted £45 for 2 racks of lamb so 16 chops! Is that how much they are nowadays?

All the other stuff came to £16.25 plus I had the herbs and oils at home.

Will add pics when I've cooked it later

That recipe is gorgeous OP - we don't always do chops (they can be quite pricey) but the seasoning works well on a butterflied leg of lamb cooked on the BBQ.

MissSueFlay · 08/09/2023 16:28

Weirdly was typing out how pricey chops are when you posted how expensive they are! I think he goes for chops because they cook quickly, it if you're not planning to do it in 30 minutes then save by using the seasoning on another cut.

AgnesNaismith · 08/09/2023 16:36

Lamb is crazily expensive, the price of each cut seems to go up and down. The recipe looks awesome, need to dig that book out here too! What is in the pomegranate drink?

BBno4 · 08/09/2023 17:01

Ice cubes
Mint
1/2 lemon
1 pomegranate
1 bottle sparkling water

So it was actually really nice, I probably spent about an 1hr in the kitchen.

The lamb I got still had the fat on it so I had to cook it longer than the time and still had fat to cut off when eating.

The couscous was really nice and so was the peppers and dips.

I really liked the pomegranate drink but it was more of a mint and lemon drink. I also had to add a few tsp of sugar as it was too sour/bland. Very refreshing though.

I would make this again but probably with cheaper lamb, like lamb neck or just fry up some lamb cubes.

The bread was well received by my family but pointless to me as I was filled up already.

Tomorrow I'm making the Peri-Peri chicken with Portuguese tarts, so I'm looking forward to that.

I'm going to try that Cypriot chicken revipe, looks really nice and ive got most of the ingredients already. Will report back on Sunday!

Sgtmajormummy · 09/09/2023 01:10

Unfortunately it turns out all my cookbooks went into storage.
Why did I do that???
So I’ll just have to lurk on this thread.
Looking good, OP.

Awittyfool · 09/09/2023 01:32

I don’t have any of his books ( his recipes seem basic but faffy ) but I do like watching his 15 minute meals.
I was very tempted by his programme making lamb kebabs with cous cous and a deconstructed Greek salad and cauliflower curry.
I had most of the ingredients in for the curry including my homegrown chilli and tomatoes so feeling positive. I had to buy a cauliflower 95p, fenugreek seeds ( I only had powder) £1.50 m couldn’t find mustard seeds even in Waitrose, fresh coriander 75p p and popadoms £1.25.
There were quite a lot of ingredients so organising, measuring, chopping and prep took 10 mins. Griddling the cauliflower took 15 mins in itself. Cooking the curry took another 15 and 5 mins extra because the cauliflower was still rock hard. It was tasty. It might be quicker in future attempts. However I will need to replace lots of the ingredients and frankly a Thai curry kit with left over chicken is my 15 min curry of choice.

Ooh my husband loves sardines. Can't wait to see the pics 😍

I tried the recipes from this book for a couple of weeks when it first came out. Could only nail the 30 minute time slot if I left the kitchen looking like a bomb had hit it, with an hours worth of clearing up! But the results were delicious. One warning - watch the calorie counts, we all piled the weight on big time.

Sourisblanche · 09/09/2023 12:30

I’ve just made the Rogan Josh curry and carrot salad for later this evening. Took me about 30 mins but I didn’t do the rice, chapati or lemon sides yet!!

AgnesNaismith · 09/09/2023 19:49

The sardines were soooo good on some sourdough!! I added extra chillies, bread and some goats cheese to the salad - definitely not healthy as pp said, I imagine eating this way all the time would be a problem but perfect for a Saturday in the heat.

It took 20 mins at most although I didn’t bother with the mousse and there is a recipe for figs (which I bought) that appears to not fit anywhere - odd.

adding my pics for pre cooking, post cooking and with the sides of halloumi (amazing) and salad. I also bought some on sale tiger prawns and grilled them but that was greedy and unnecessary.

AgnesNaismith that looks so nice and flavourful
I had the same problem yesterday with the nutmeg, I read it about 5 times before I saw it hidden in the method, I almost ditched it.

The chicken was really nice, I enjoyed the peri-peri sauce and peppers.

The potatoes were amazing, I will definitely make them again.

The Portuguese tarts were nice, but they were no way in comparison to Portuguese tarts, they were orange flavoured. My son said he thought they tasted better than Portuguese tarts though so...

It took me over an hour as I was washing up as I went along.

looks great, might try it this week. How faffy were the tarts to do? And how spicy was the peri peri? We’re all for spice but older dd isn’t great with it.

The figs are still in my fridge, just wasting away now.

Sourisblanche · 12/09/2023 10:44

The curry was really nice and I finished it for my lunch yesterday. I guess it’s really just curry from a paste/jar though.

We had the satay chicken last night with mixed reviews, I’ve made better satay sauces in my time.

Tonight is tomato soup with croutons as I have a glut of garden tomatoes to use up. I may make the prune puddings but I could be the only one in my family eating them which is dangerous Smile

BBno4 · 12/09/2023 11:07

The tarts weren't that faffy, I bought prerolled. Just unrolled then rolled back up and sliced.
