Froze my eggs by accident

Baldieheid · 26/08/2023 12:55

New fridge freezer.

I'm still getting to grips with the temperature control and have managed to freeze (in the fridge part) two entire boxes of eggs (24 eggs).

Am i throwing them out or will the be safe to use once defrosted?

Thank heavens it’s only hens’ eggs.

Didn’t realise this was in recipes/food at first and expected something completely different.

Baldieheid · 26/08/2023 13:01

Oh my, that just made me laugh. Yes, just regular hens eggs in cardboard boxes.

Sorry for the confusion!!!

Me too!
Are they cracked? Think if cracked you need to discard, if not they need to defrost in fridge and only use in cooking!

Baldieheid · 26/08/2023 13:59

no, none are cracked. I never use raw egg anyway so theyd always be cooked.

It may just be the ones that were touching the back wall - that part ofthe box has ice on it.

I've just hardboiled the 4 from each box at that end and they seem totally fine. Maybe they weren't frozen after all, maybe it was just the box....

I live to confuse!

I'd ask MN to edit my title but its quite funny so....

What a title, made me laugh out loud, since I was thinking of fertility things first off.

You can freeze eggs in their shell, but some may crack on expansion, discard those. Any that don't will be fine for cooking.

No! Please don't!

It's a great title. I just thought how the bloody hell does one manage to do that by accident, respect to whoever managed it.

PostOpOp · 26/08/2023 20:01

Thought this was about something else entirely and clicked because I wondered how on earth you'd managed to do it by mistake! 😂

I thought the same, was like, blimey, that’s a complex task to do by accident. Got even more confused with it being in the food and recipes section. Eventually worked it out but have enjoyed the chuckle.

Well, apparently the shelves in my new fridge are all at slightly different temps. The bottom is the coldest, top is least cold. Who knew?

I thought everybody knew that!

GrumpyPanda · 27/08/2023 15:15

Thank God I never put eggs in the fridge at all so this can't happen.

I've never had a new fridge before, just second hand ones, so I suspect mine have all been a bit "flexible' when it came to temperature control.

It's a wonder we haven't all died, to be honest.

Me, I knew. Warm air rises (or cold air sinks, one of the two - or possibly both). That's why the top shelf in a (non-fan) oven is the hottest.

I managed to freeze a cucumber once. That was a mess when it thawed!

Aparecium · 31/08/2023 23:25

You're definitely not the only person to have frozen eggs by accident BlushGrin Did you know that eggs do not need to be kept in the fridge? Problem solved.

If your eggs freeze again, don't bin the cracked ones. Just keep them in the freezer until you need them, peel them still frozen and let them defrost in a bowl. You can even slice the peeled eggs while still frozen, and fry them straight away.
