How to clean gas bbq

Probably sounds like a stupid question but how do you clean your gas bbq? My ex would never get one so I treated myself to one recently. I've got to grips with cooking on it but not how to clean it.

I read to turn it on full with the lid down for 5 minutes and let it all burn off before scrubbing/wiping the grill. I tried that but then flames started shooting out of the back of the bbq and I had to turn off the gas and carefully move it away from the fence/plants. I was pretty concerned that the whole garden was about to catch light.

I can clean the cooking grill in the sink (although a real pain as only part of it fits in, maybe it would go in the dishwasher) but what else do I need to clean? I've emptied the small drip tray as that was full of grease, how would I clean the metal heat shields that go over the burners (I think that's what they are called), do the burners themselves need cleaning and how should I clean the actual bottom of the bbq under the burners as that is covered in carbon deposits and grease now.

Don’t put the grill in the dishwasher, it will ruin it. I bought a large shallow plastic tub to pop ours in to soak and scrub. Soda crystals work well in the soak.

are you emptying the grease trap at the bottom? I tend to remove and empty that and then put a newspaper underneath and then scrape any crap off the sides down through the gap where grease would run, then give the bbq a good spray with koh and use one of their magic scrubbers to give it a good clean.

The Koh is a good idea, I have some of that and one of the scrubbers.

I hadn't emptied the grease trap for a while so have done that now

Ooh @NeedSleepNow I was going to start a similar thread as I hate the fact that after every BBQ we end up with the grills hanging around indoors while we clean them ( or put off cleaning them!)
We do put ours in the dishwasher and havent noticed ill effects .
I wondered if other people do clean them properly after every use as it's quite a faff bit it seems from this they do!
