Help! Do I have enough food?

I've never been good at calculating how much food to provide when catering for a large bunch of people. I either end up with too little or too much but prefer to err on the side of having leftovers/take home bags.

So on Saturday I'm organising the dessert buffet at a party for 75 people and assuming most people will have a piece of cake and maybe something else too, I've got the following:

5 large catering cakes/gateaus (each one says it has 18 slices = 90 slices but 70 if some people take bigger pieces)

2 x large cheesecakes = 28 slices in total

36 cupcakes
24 doughnuts
20 large cookies

All in all there's 108 slices of cake and 80 x assorted doughnuts/cookies etc.

On the assumption that people can get a bit greedy when they see sweet stuff, is that enough?

Yes sounds more than enough to me. Can I come 😅

memyselfiesandI · 14/08/2023 23:42

Sounds lovely but more likely a diabetics worst nightmare.

I know! 😬 I don't think we have any diabetics coming but I do have a gluten free and a dairy free cake for three people who have allergies.

How about a fruit salad?

How about a fruit salad?

I was thinking about that but as we're using paper plates, thought it might get a bit too sloppy/wet on the plates. 😬

You should be ok with paper plates as people will east dessert straight away.

You could make sure there wasn't lots of extra juice!

I find with fruit salad, people often just have a bowl of it, or they may have a piece of cheesecake and a scoop of fruit salad.

More than enough, and that's coming from someone who'd have three desserts in a buffet situation. Grin

LylaLee · 15/08/2023 00:11

Pre cut the cakes so that greedy piggies don't turn your 20 slice cake into a 10 slice one.

otherhalves · 15/08/2023 00:47

Thank you for the extra ideas. I'm picking up the cakes from the cash and carry so I'll see if they have any giant boxes of strawberries. If they do I'll do a bowl of strawberries (with pouring cream on side) so there's a semi healthy option too.

Thank you for the reassurance there's likely more than enough!

You could put fruit salad in plastic 'glasses'.

tealandteal · 15/08/2023 03:46

Something like strawberries, melon and grapes would be quite “dry” for a fruit salad.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/08/2023 06:43

It's very cake heavy. I would have less gateaux and maybe a pavlova or a bowl of small meringues so people can add strawberries and cream for a lighter pudding.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 15/08/2023 06:51

Some savoury bits would be good. Not everyone has a sweet tooth. I'd expect a lot of leftovers..!

I'm assuming someone else is doing the savoury stuff

caringcarer · 15/08/2023 06:55

I'd ditch the doughnuts in favour of strawberries, grapes and melon slices. I don't have a sweet tooth and I'd only eat the fruit.

AvengedQuince · 15/08/2023 06:58

Definitely fruit! I would not risk cakes from a cash and carry as I'd be afraid they would be like Costco cake that tasted funny then made me unwell.

booksforever · 15/08/2023 07:16

How about fruit kebabs? Easy to eat and prepare.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 15/08/2023 15:15

Is it desserts to follow a savoury course or are the desserts the only offering?

dcadmamagain · 15/08/2023 22:12

Far too much cake and no real choice.

fruit kebabs would be good

little brownie squares/flapjacks

grapes

coxesorangepippin · 15/08/2023 22:16
