What's your favourite comfort food?

So I'm currently ill with a nasty stomach bug that has lasted a few days and I can't eat anything I like (pasta, cheese, etc) or keep much down at all so I'm reduced to fantasising about food instead!

What's your favourite comfort food - your 'go to' when you feel a bit under the weather?

I like penne all'arrabiata. Chilli makes me feel well and feels as if it cleanses the illness away. Some people get mood boosts from chillies and I definitely do.

If I have a cold, green veg soup with pesto or chicken barley soup feel healing.

Stewed apple and custard. It's a hug in a bowl. Hope you're feeling better soon

Greenfree · 04/08/2023 22:38

Cottage pie or lasagna

Yesabsolutely · 04/08/2023 22:39

Cheesy Beans with toasted soldiers. Lots of cheese!!

Baldieheid · 04/08/2023 22:40

Baked potato with cheese and baked beans.

Hot buttered toast if I'm too ill to cook the spud.

My suggestion involves both pasta and cheese (of a kind)
Bachelor's Pasta 'n' Sauce - Cheese& Broccoli.

Sausage and Mash; shop-bought Macaroni Cheese with some mash; egg mayo roll.

libertybonds · 04/08/2023 22:46

Chicken broth with tiny carrots and celery (well cooked) and star pasta, with salted crackers floating in it

Seven up and crackers

Kraft macaroni and cheese

Eggs on toast

Pho

milkydress · 04/08/2023 22:48

Pasta with a ton of cheese grated on top or buffalo mozzarella plonked on the middle

If I'm feeling poorly with a cold then it has to be Heinz tomato soup with hot buttered toast. Maybe cheese on toast.

Salt and vinegar crisps or chicken nuggets after a tummy bug.

But ultimate comfort food for me is Mac and cheese.

Dal and rice for me. It’s simple and feels nourishing.

RocketIceLollie · 04/08/2023 22:55

Ice lollies. Not ice cream but the fruit ones. Oh and ice poles.

In winter I love pea and ham soup. More of a thick, ham stew rather than a watery soup though.

I buy a smoked ham hock, quick soak peas and any veg I have- generally carrot, celery, potato, onion, swede etc and cook in the slow cooker. Delicious with crunchy bread and butter 😋

If you are still vomiting OP- small sips of water/broth are better than larger amounts. Dioralyte can help replace your salt/minerals and it can be frozen to make an ice lolly you can suck. Not a great taste, but hydrating and beneficial if you have D&V.

I love all the one-pot wonders you can simmer for ages, the smell makes me hungry - chilli, curries, paella, stews etc - but no energy to cook or eat it when I'm not well. One of my favourite easy comfort foods is creamy paprika chicken either with pasta or rice.

Mary Berry's comforting, creamy paprika chicken is a quick dinner classic that will please all comers. Serve with plain boiled rice or creamy mash to double the comfort factor.

Toast, boiled egg or soup.

PurpleSky300 · 04/08/2023 23:03

Love chicken soups - I'm going to try the Yorkshire Provender roast chicken one on the back of Mumsnet recommendations in another thread.

I also like all the Knorr packet soups when I'm ill - Florida spring veg, Crofters thick veg, Chicken noodle etc

Thanks for this. Love soups, so comforting.
Great idea re: the dioralyte as I do have D&V. Probably more V but horrible cramps.

My favourite comfort food is homemade macaroni cheese but when I’m sick I always crave chopped up tomatoes and cucumber with a beef oxo cube crumbled over the top. Depending on how sick I’ve been, this might include silver skin pickled onions! I know I’m disgusting 😆

FrogSplash · 04/08/2023 23:14

Hot and sour soup from my local Chinese if I'm bunged up. Hot rice pudding with ginger jam stirred through it if it's cold and I need cheering up.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 04/08/2023 23:15

Creamy cajun chicken pasta & spaghetti bolognese 🥰
