Why is asda fruit so horrible

All their fruit and salads are just horrible. It's the only supermarket near me.
I went away for the day and went to sainsburys and bought some strawberries. They are delicious. Bought some from asda yesterday..yuk not sweet at all and hard. Just horrible flavour.
Why is this ?

Might I add , same with their blackberries. They have no flavour.

Ones I bought from lidl were nicer .
I'm trying to be healthy and it's so hard when the fruit is disgusting

Really? They sell the Annabel’s strawberries which is the same (madly expensive) brand that they have in Whole Foods! Maybe the basics ones are no good?

We've always felt the same too. Did the big shop from Asda but got the fruit on way home at M&S in the station or Sainsbury's local on the way home. So much difference .

Where were they from - country not shop? Imported fruit is always crap

Their extra special range of berries are lovely, the blueberries are the best I’ve found round here. Not cheap but then they’re not cheap anywhere really.

But yeah, the standard ones never look particularly inspiring which is why I ended up getting the pricier ones.

We have a booths near us, sometimes meet in-laws for a coffee there at the weekend and last time I thought I’d treat myself to some nice overpriced fruit from there - it all looked nice but was off within about 2 days.

Yep Asda is the worst superMarket for fruit IMO

Destinedforfakeness · 25/07/2023 18:27

I haven't found this. I don't go loads but do go occasionally and stick up on berries etc as they're cheaper there. But I suppose if this is consistently your experince then go elsewhere?

We got scotty brand strawberries from asda this week and they’re delicious and sweet 😋

Viktorella · 25/07/2023 18:35

Someone told me years ago that they semi-freeze their fruit during distribution to prolong life which is why it's always a bit over soft and tasteless when brought back to ambient temperature

We find their fruit variable. Currently their expensive range of cherries are the best I can find, and that includes comparisons with Waitrose and the local greengrocers. Also the expensive range of raspberries is good.

Bananas are just bananas. Otherwise I tend to agree with you, OP.

On holiday, trying Asda for the first time in years, we’ve had two punnets of strawberries, one the basics range, tasted awful, the normal ones were lovely.
