Hi

I can't tolerate oats nor gluten but would love to have a warm porridge in the morning

Are there any alternatives that are nutritious and taste nice?

Thanks

I’m same as you, I have Nutribrex , which I buy from ASDA best alternative so far , it looks like weetabix, but is made from sorghum.

If you add warm milk or water to Nutribrex it goes like porridge texture and is nice with berries, yoghurt etc also involves no faffing

You can buy quinoa flakes to make porridge but they cost a bomb. I got mine from Ocado (I was expecting a much bigger bag for what I paid so I'm unlikely to get them again).

My gluten-free DSIS can eat gluten-free oats.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/07/2023 12:05

I'm gluten free and can definitely tolerate gluten free porridge from M&S -

US style grits With eggs on top an option maybe- as it's corn

I don't know which of these are gluten free but I make "porridge" using a mix of ground almonds, chia seeds, ground flax seed and some bigger seeds like sunflower and pumpkin. You can get mixes of ground flax/sunflower/pumpkin too. For extra flavour add coconut (oil, or flakes) or a spoon of a nut butter or some frozen blueberries or whatever.

Oats contain gliadin which is similar to gluten, very sensitive coeliacs react to that as well as gluten.

Avenin, as in aveeno.

Gliadin is a hormone involved in appetite regulation, IIRC.

I lived off this when i had gestational diabetes as couldn't tolerate oats or weetabix or normal porridge...

www.thegraciouspantry.com/clean-eating-spiced-almond-porridge/

It's basically ground almonds, chia seeds and milk of choice with whatever spice blend you like (cinnamon etc) and then heated in a pan and more milk and berries/yoghurt added after. I made a blend of it and just used to add my milk and pop it in the microwave. It's a nice warm comforting texture.

Amaranth, buckwheat, millet, quinoa and rice flakes at sensible prices

You might need to mix a few to get the taste texture that you like.

One to add that hasn't been mentioned...

Tapioca... either pearl or flaked.

The texture is different, but works the same

Cornmeal/polenta? Not sure if it's gluten free.

Yellowdays · 14/07/2023 19:27

True, barley does contain gluten. I'd forgotten. How about rice pudding, sugar free or otherwise? It can easily be made in the oven and kept for a few days. I sometimes make an almond milk or soy one, when I'm in calorie conserving mode.

Oops , thank you for correcting that, I don’t like to give out wrong information

Jamaican cornmeal porridge, made with coconut milk and spices

Untrained · 17/07/2023 08:48

I get my quinoa flakes from Ocado but health food shops (like Holland & Barrett) and online have them too - same for millet flakes. I like my porridge sweet so I have it with a little jam or fruit smoothie mixed in, never noticed a bitter taste the way I have it!

Sarahmay420 · 17/07/2023 20:55

Cornmeal porridge. It is a Caribbean breakfast porridge made from cornmeal, any type of milk and flavoured with vanilla essence, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar to your liking.
