I've made her chocolate brownies a few times for birthdays (usually my own ) - they look great piled up with a few candles or mini sparklers and it saves people having to wait while the cake is cut before diving in!

i have had mixed results. when i had an electric oven it went better, now gas a lot of her recipes bit too wet.

raspberry heart one from feast was good, cut the sugar down though. quadruple choc cake also successful.

The autumnal birthday cake is really very lovely, though the frosting is very sweet and contains uncooked egg white. Looks spectacular and is very easy.

Chocolate fudge cake from Nigella bites. The best cake ever.

Glammama · 22/02/2008 22:03

Old Fashioned Chocolate cake from Feast. That's our standard birthday cake now.

the storecupboard choc orange cake from Domestic Goddess, but use raspberry jam not marmalade

piss easy to make too, and only one pan to wash

fishie · 22/02/2008 22:08

i made that storecupboard one with plum jam, it was disgusting.

MrsBadger · 22/02/2008 22:18

never tried it with plum...

The Chocolate Guinness Cake - sounds bizarre but good dark chocolate cake.

Tapster · 23/02/2008 19:18

Thanks for the suggestions will look up the recipes - chocolate guiness cake or old fashined chocolate cake from Feast sound great. Raw egg white frosting I'll give a miss, DD has a severe egg white allergy and she doesn't eat the cake as she is so used to not eating it and hates the texture even though she has stopped reacting but what she does eat is the icing.

I make the birthday cake from her book How to Eat. Really easy to make, although ingredients a bit weird (uses a tin of condensed milk!) and absolutely delicious.

DS1 and 2 both always request it for their birthdays.

chocolate cloud cake (nigella bites), you can't put candles on it as it's got cream piled on top, but it is divine

moodlumthehoodlum · 23/02/2008 19:43

I made the quadruple chocolate loaf for sil birthday cake last weekend.

It was DIVINE. the best chocolate cake I have ever had. And there was none left by the end of the day.
