Wilton Icing Colour gel - help!

Hello.

I’m baking a birthday cake for which I need some pretty bright orange buttercream.

I’ve just made some using Wilton Icing Colour (Concentrated Food Colouring) in Orange, but it’s still quite pale even though I’ve added a fair amount!

I noticed the label says not to use more than 70mg of gel per 100g of icing. I’ve already added almost a quarter of the pot (contains 28g) and now I’m concerned about adding more…

The warning doesn’t actually say why you shouldn’t add more and I can’t find anything online.

My brain is slightly fried so I’m going to hold off icing the cake till the morning now.

Can anyone help explain? I’d be most grateful!

They’ve made this orange by adding red, orange and brown.
I wonder if the amount is because it has sweetener in it and too much has a laxative effect?

Put your buttercream in the microwave for a minute. The heat activates the colour. Allow it to firm back up in the fridge. Repeat as necessary

Thanks both!

For future reference the colouring pastes are far more concentrated. You can get them online or from the range.

Thank you. This is a gel, which is the same sort of thing though I think?

I'm more concerned about whether there are going to be any ill effects if I add more gel to the buttercream… Random advice on the label but no explanation of what the issue is if use more!

Have just got myself into a bit of a flap about it! 😅

Sugarflair are much better then Wilton's. You only need a teeny weeny bit.
