Homemade Perfect Paella whilst in Spain ! Help !

Weve discovered a big electric paella pan in our rented holiday house and would love to cook a big paella tonight. There are 10 of us and we are on a budget so trying to eat in rather than out. However whilst I can cook (bbq’d some octopus yesterday for everyone and we are all still alive !) I’m stumped at super mercado as my Spanish is awful. Can any mumsnetters help ? What do I need to purchase to make the perfect paella ?

Paella rice, saffron, onions, peppers, chicken/rabbit/seafood, stock, garlic, frozen peas. I don’t know how authentic it is, but that’s how I make it. The trick is to not stir, but to add the liquid and leave it to absorb. Enjoy - I’m bet jealous of you being in Spain.

I’ve just realised you were maybe asking for how to say the ingredients in Spanish! In which case, I’ve no idea…

@AgentProvocateur thank you ! I was planning to do a prawn, chicken & chorizo. Id try the rabbit of it were just me & hubby but rest of family would refuse the rabbit. Yes, need the Spanish names of all the base ingredients but thank you for recipe.

Rice = arroz
Saffron = azafrán
Onion = cebolla
Pepper = pimiento
Chicken = pollo
Prawns = gambas
Garlic = ajo
Stock = caldo

Autocorrect nightmare to type that!

Good luck!

QuentininQuarantino · 28/05/2023 07:47

It’s very easy.

pollo (chicken)
langostinos (prawn big things)
arroz paella (rice - has to be paella or bomba rice)
caldo para paella (the liquid - it’s a pre prepared stock)
azafran - saffron
alubias - beans (if you want the big butter beans)
judias - beans if you want the green beans.
ajo - garlic
cebolla - onions
limon - lemon

remember to pronounce your Cs as Th and your J as H and you’ll be grand!

chorizo shouldn’t go in a paella (I’m a purist!) but is of course chorizo en Spanish. Don’t forget your slices of lemon. I also like to add white wine to my stock!

QuentininQuarantino · 28/05/2023 07:51

Also I’ve just realised about the Cs, it’s only a th if it’s before an i or an E, otherwise it’s a normal c.

so say:

THEBOYA (for onion!) (because two Ls = Y)
KALDO (for stock)

You definitely need a tap or two of smoked paprika.

Google translate!

You can also get frozen paella that you add your protein too.

Ended up using @QuentininQuarantino recipe, plus paella stock & prepared spices from super market. Hardest part was not stirring once rice went in but worth it as was absolutely delicious. Thanks all for your advice !

Oh and leeks rather than onions as knives not sharp enough at Villa to chop properly. Used chicken thigh and a smoked blood sausage as meat base and added a fresh fish paella mix at the very end and let them steam.
