Vol au vents

Coronation coming up and we will be watching on the TV. Just family but I plan to do a nice buffet lunch.

I have this nostalgic urge to serve vol au cents. When I did my O level Cookery in 1978 I made them from scratch. However I have long since realised life is too short to make your own puff pastry.

I seem to recall you used to be able to buy vol au vent cases to keep in the freezer and cook from frozen. I cannot find them anywhere now. Maybe I am 30 years out of date?

So, first question, does anyone know if you can still buy them and, if so, where.

Second question. If I end up buying ready made puff pastry and making the cases myself, does anyone have any idea how far in advance I can bake them. I don't want to leave myself too much to do on the morning as I want to be able to get it all ready then get sat down in front if the TV.

Thanks in advance.

I bought some recently. Possibly Sainsbury's, not sure, but definitely still around.

Oh thanks. My local Sainsburys don't have them. Or M&S. I will try Tesco

I buy them at Xmas cos I can’t resist a nostalgic 80s family buffet!

I get them from Iceland as Tesco near me don’t stock them.

ModerationInEverything · 27/04/2023 17:47

All of my family love them! We usually buy them in Morrisons.

Rosiepeta · 27/04/2023 17:48

Iceland/the food warehouse usually has them!

every now and then I make up a batch of chicken salad ones for lunch.

Oh thanks all. I was starting to think I was behind the times wanting these. We will try Tesco and Iceland and failing that do one of the recipes here.

Was thinking of filling them with prawns in Marie Rose sauce.

In fact the whole buffet is starting to go in a retro direction. Seriously considering doing a "hedgehog" with cheese, pineapple and cocktail sausages on sticks.

Jus Rol frozen ones are great, I get them from Tesco or local Spar.
They are lush filled with chicken and mushroom sauce

I couldn’t find any at Christmas!!
but even if I did I wasn’t sure what to put in them over than egg mayonnaise 😂

I love a vol au vont and will eat leftover ones for breakfast the next day 😅I usually buy the frozen cases from Morrisons.
