I have some Trex with a use by date of December 2022. Would you use it? It smells fine. It's a whole pack.

Took me several reads to understand you weren't asking about dinosaur. I would avoid eating dinosaur.

If the trex looks and smells fine, hasn't changed colour or texture, it is likely fine.

Yep!

Custardbanana · 09/04/2023 00:02

What's a trex?

dementedpixie · 09/04/2023 00:05

Is trex like lard?
And you'll be cooking with it?
Should be fine

Georgyporky · 09/04/2023 10:43

I have done. It's fine as no meat or dairy, just sniff to be sure.

Hey there is nowt wrong with a Dino burger ! 😁

If trex is lard it will have meat derivatives in it but as long as its been kept cool and unopened I think it will be fine.
Try warming a little bit up and sniff it , if it doesn't smell rancid / fishy it should be fine.

I am curious to know what you are cooking now though.

Couldn't make that stuff go off! I am using up 5 yr old stuff from the freezer now to be fair but I wouldn't think to look at a date on it as it's practically indestructible. Makes lovely pastry though half and half with butter.

Redebs · 09/04/2023 14:01

If it's a Best Before, you're probably ok (although fats can go bad)

If it's a Use By, then bin it. Use By is absolutely date limited.

BlackForestCake · 09/04/2023 15:17

We are talking about pure vegetable fat though. Can rancid fat make you ill or does it just taste horrible?

Theunamedcat · 09/04/2023 15:20

I think mine was older I used it last week im still here

marylou25 · 09/04/2023 20:38

Just tastes horrible mainly, doubt you'd eat enough of gone off fat to make yourself ill as it's a horrible taste, never had gone off trex but have had gone off butter in pastry, you'd smell it before you got a chance to take a bite!
