Birthday tomato pasta bake

This is ds's special request for his 6th birthday tea.
You would think that it would be simple but my tomato pasta sauces are always underwhelming.
Just a bit watery and tasteless.

Can anyone please give me a really good recipe?

Definitely need a bit of sugar and ideally a glug or red wine or port. I add a spoonful of red pesto too.

He's 6... Though you and I would love that additions, he probably won't.

My DS is doing a cookery course for his DofE and made a tomato chicken pasta bake the other week.

The tomato sauce started of exactly how I always do mine - sauté onion, garlic, celery and carrots; squeeze in tomato puree; add tin of tomatoes. Then, randomly, add half a tin (the tin from the chopped tomatoes) of orange juice! Simmer and reduce for 20mins. Part blend to get out the bigger lumps. It was absolutely delicious! I never would have thought to add orange juice but it really worked. DS was so proud of himself and achieved what I very rarely do - a meal that was lapped up by all three kiddos!
