Baked beans with sauce that's not tomato

Any such thing as baked beans in sauce that's not tomato? Or tinned spaghetti hoops not in tomato sauce? The sauce also can't have lactose in.

My son is lactose intorerant and allergic to tomatos and would like a couple of convenience food options for him.

Tomato allergy sucks. It really does :(

SpringIntoChaos · 22/03/2023 21:01

Could you maybe make your own, using haricot beans? Just a thought OP, if nobody comes up with a better solution for you 👍

SiobhanSharpe · 22/03/2023 21:07

That's a tough one. I don't know if there is anything you can actually buy that will fit your requirements.
But you may be able to make some things from a tin of cannelini beans. Whether he will like them or not is another thing! But I would heat a tin of 'naked' beans gently in a pan with some olive oil and garlic, mash them up a bit then serve on toast with an extra drizzle of olive oil. Would some lacto-free cheese grated over the top be possible?

Or crispy bacon bits scattered over to add some texture and flavour.

I don't think such a thing exists, it's either plain beans in water, beans or pasta shapes in some sort of tomatoey sauce or pasta shapes in cheese sauce.

It's not particularly convenient but I think your only hope is to batch cook something and freeze it in small portions to get out when needed. Baked beans are haricot beans so I'd try using a tin of these and mixing with your own blended veg sauce. Possibly roasted red pepper for the colour and something orangey and sweet for taste such as butternut squash or sweet potato. It might take some experimenting. You could also use that sauce with macaroni or little pasta shapes to mimic spaghetti hoops.

Bean salad is beans in a minty vinaigrette or other dressing and I have them hot sometimes.

You can make a nice sauce from peppers if he can have those?

Roasted with some garlic and pureed.

topofbighill · 23/03/2023 13:53

Boston baked beans? Most recipes just ask for some tomato purée but you could thicken with flour. Traditionally made with bacon/pork belly/pancetta but also not necessary if you're looking for an alternative to baked beans.

This kind of thing

My son LOVES mixed beans. He is happy with things plain but yes a nice dressing is good. Mine also like chickpeas and lentils served as a salad.

Ponderingwindow · 23/03/2023 14:03

I miss baked beans so much. I used to make them in the smoker with bbq. They were so delicious.

tomato allergy sucks

i do enjoy a good mixed bean salad. Beans in a nice vinaigrette. It is not remotely the same thing and I have never found a good one canned.

StrugglingwithIvanhoe · 23/03/2023 14:12

I agree tomato allergy is the pits; my husband can't eat potatoes either. It's amazing how many foods have tomato puree or potato starch in!! I've even found potato starch in biscuits.

Anyway, I have made him things like cassoulet, chilli and spag bol using Nomato sauce, it works pretty well, not as rich as the real thing but nice. There are several brands online, and recipes to make your own version.

StrugglingwithIvanhoe · 23/03/2023 14:14

Also made him baked beans, very successful.

Bearpawk · 23/03/2023 14:16

I love black beans and in Central America in breakfast buffets they heat them in the water from the cans and add some seasoning and spices. Chopped coriander if you wish. DELISH.

Bearpawk · 23/03/2023 14:18

Also was going to suggest white beans with nomato sauce

FusionChefGeoff · 23/03/2023 14:23

Is 'convenience' the only brief as there's I'm sure theres loads of quick / shelf stable ideas other than tinned beans and spaghetti.

Soup / eggs / tuna / corned beef / noodles (not sure on lactose / tomato allergy) / frankfurters

Then loads of frozen options

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 23/03/2023 14:41

@Bearpawk brilliant! I've never heard of nomato sauce thats exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Thank you
