Weird Birthday cake request

DS (soon to be 14) has asked for a Birthday cake with regal icing and a custard filling.
I see cakes with custard filling (which don't seem very Birthday cake-like) and I see cakes with regal icing. In my head I can easily just bung some icing on top, but will that work? Does it sound gross?

I've just had a look at the Nigella one, and while it does look lovely and pretty straight forward the filling is essentially a custard flavoured butter cream. That's not really what he wants.

If you Google Boston Cream Pie filling recipe you will get the proper version which is basically a thick cream custard rather than Nigella’s easier buttercream version.

With ref to the deleted post, I don’t know what it said, but I’m struggling to think of anything controversial enough to be deleted on an innocuous thread about recipes! Confused Why bother to post at all?

I can't be just me reading this and thinking that he really wants a custard slice for his birthday.

Sounds more like a fondant fancie. I'd love a massive fondant fancie for a birthday cake.

TheOrigRights · 20/03/2023 16:31

@Custardbanana @Pestispeeved
I think you may both be onto something. I shall do some sleuthing.
I have always made birthday cakes myself, apart from the year DS1 turned 10 and DS2 was 2 days old!

If he'd love a giant fondant fancy or a vanilla slice then I think the shop bought ones of those are perfectly fine.

You could just buy one.

Tell him it is a special thing for 14th birthdays.

You need that already rolled packs.they are really thin. I think you could get away with it then.

TheOrigRights · 21/03/2023 10:02

Summary follow up: "just buy me a nice chocolate cake, Mum".

Now, if DS1 was home he'd appreciate a home made cake, but DS2 isn't bothered. So I get my Friday evening back & we both get a decent cake - everyone's a winner.

You think? A decent Chocolate cake is notoriously hard to find ☺️

Oh hush now!
I could get any old affair and stick a Double Decker on it. He'll be happy!

At 14 there is a risk he'd like a nostalgic caterpillar cake Grin
