Sweetner in Fentimans!

Mother's Day is ruined. I had a glass of Fentiman's ginger beer this evening and it now has sweetner in it! It's gone from being a delicious soft drink with a proper gingery kick to being undrinkable because of the stevia aftertaste. Please, wonder wise women of mumsnet, tell me your favour sweetner free ginger beer.

Fever-Tree drinks are worth a look - I think they have stuck with proper sugar and put their prices up a bit.

We used to love Fentimans drinks - their Madagascan cola was lovely - but it’s been spoiled with sweeteners.

You could try making it! It's very easy to brew with yeast, sugar and ginger powder.

Luscombe is the best I've ever tasted - mmmm my mouth is watering at the thought

Breckland Orchard 'posh pop' ginger beer with chilli. Sweetener free and absolutely lovely!

Really?!? They always prided themselves on not using artificial sweeteners!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/03/2023 21:23

I guess that Stevia doesn’t count as artificial because it is made from a plant, @CalloohCallayFrabjousDay. Which is just sneaky, because stevia doesn’t taste like sugar - it is just as horrible as artificial sweeteners.

Im so angry at the use of these things, particularly in brands which are premium and previously were used to not having these things in them

I dont believe they're good for you, they still have an effect on insulin in the body, the body prepares itself as if the product was sugar

I accept (although dont consume them) that they might come in useful in genuine sweet items, items that 'should' or would have had sugar in them

But they are in everything even where sugar shouldnt be used anyway or where sugar could be cut or removed anyway, such as in some savoury foods.

Shame on Fentimans.

Oh crap! They were "safe" for me to drink too. Anything other than sugar has a laxative effect on me and just tastes awful 😢

Gingerella by Karma Drinks is gorgeous, if you like a pretty spicy kick!
And it's organic/fairtrade.

hedgehoglurker · 20/03/2023 11:52

I now use Belvoir Ginger Cordial and add sparkling water. Actually, I use various flavours of their cordials as most fizzy drinks are ruined these days.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/03/2023 14:41

Oh, thanks all. I've tried a couple of these previously but they've not had the kick of Fentimans but still lots of options to try. Hopefully I'll find a good alternative. I had thought Fentimans would be safe because it's a premium brand but apparently not.

Have you tried Karma drinks Gingerella?
I agree though, sweeteners are the bane of my life.

anxiouslemons · 20/03/2023 15:31

Ah sorry. Gingerella is ginger ale not beer.

For ginger beer try artisan drinks Fiery ginger beer 🤞🏼
