Just used icing sugar to thicken stew instead of flour. WTF do I do now?

I thought it wasn't thickening properly, so I added a bit more. Any bright ideas to make it edible or have I just wasted an hour and a lot of organic minced lamb. It's supposed to be shepherds pie btw.

put it in a sieve and wash it, make a new stock/gravy and mix in

I think the only thing you can do is to add a load of chilli as they kind of counteract each other. But chilli minced lamb would be nice imo. Also add the juice of a lime as that will cut through it.

What does it taste like? - is it very sweet?

Try a bit of salt/lemon?

BroccoliSpears · 11/02/2008 20:15

You could give it to wheresthehamster to throw on the floor?

random · 11/02/2008 20:16

call it sweet and sour stew ?

Carmenere · 11/02/2008 20:17

The classic flavours of south east asia are sweet, sour, salt and chilli so ramp it up into a thai dish with lime, chilli and soy sauce and add a can of coconut milk to finish it off.

Oh no!

My Mum used cocoa instead of Bisto once.

Rinse in boiling water, and add tinned toms, stock and herbs.

Have you tasted it? I may not be that bad. You could add a touch of vinegar to bring down the sweetness.

nooka · 11/02/2008 20:23

Try vinegar, lemon or lime and spices. But it may still not taste very nice

PortAndLemon · 11/02/2008 20:25

What does it taste like? That's the critical factor. As others have said, I'd be inclined to up the sourness to offset the sweetness -- so vinegar, lime juice, something like that.

I've already put in the wine and stock so can't rinse. I was too scared to taste it but have just done so. It isn't too bad although DH suggested having it for pudding. I think I'll go with the vinegar option. Thanks.

I'm not normally this bad btw! I had no sleep last night thanks to both DS. They screamed all day, I fell down the stairs, I've a bad head, and now sugar in my stew. I think I'll go to bed.

Poor you! My own disaster was with organic lamb mince. What a night!

cupsoftea · 11/02/2008 20:41

put some curry spices in & it'll be ok (hopefully!)
