Does anyone else get fed up with the amount of low fat stuff you have to trawl through to find normal food in the supermarket?

Particularly in the chilled section.

You really have to hunt for full fat yogurts among all the low fat.

"Virtually no fat" cottage cheese .

The only full fat cream cheese is plain - all the flavoured ones are low fat.

And last week I gave up trying to find chocolate mousse that wasn't low fat.

Yep!

ladytophamhatt · 11/02/2008 19:45

i always buy full fat versions of stuff too.

BTW BS, I stop buying choc moouses when I read the ingredients....its got beef gelatine it in.
sorry but no mousse of mine is going to have any cow in it. Its shocking the amount of things have it in actually.

SheherazadetheGoat · 11/02/2008 19:49

alot of low fat things have gelatine in them [boak].

ladytophamhatt · 11/02/2008 19:51

yes, the lowest fat Flora spread has pig gelatine it it.

PIG

I thought butter was made from milk...so what the F*ck is a pig doing in there??

Loads of things you would make at home without gelatine have it in when you buy it from the supermarket. Its the bane of my vegetarian dh's life. Its in all kinds of stuff from Jams to icing, to mouses to cakes & biscuits sometimes, and often in some more gimmicky yoghurts and just random weird stuff that you wouldn't think twice to check.

BroccoliSpears · 11/02/2008 20:03

Am super-vigilant about geletine and other animal products as am a veggie myself.

It is a bit shocking what you find dead animals in.

So, that's full fat, chemical free, vegetarian, organic, fair trade, locally sourced... any wonder shopping is a big boring faff?

Ice cream is another one that often has gelatine in it. Think manufacturers can't be bothered to wait for things to set or thicken so they do it artificially.

SheherazadetheGoat · 11/02/2008 20:11

[boaks again for good measure]

I try to buy the products with the shortest list of ingredients. I have been known to spend a lot of time looking at labels! One of the reasons I buy a lot of organic products (although some of them are full of crap too).

annoyingdevil · 11/02/2008 20:29

Yes, it pisses me off. I'm sure that low fat food has contributed to the obesity crisis, as has artificial sweetener

MrsFogi · 11/02/2008 20:29

This really annoys me every time I go to Sainsburys. I just want to buy full fat plain fromage frais for dh and dd1 but it does not exist (only low fat etc which dh won't eat and I don't want to feed dd). But......there are loads of sugar filled flavoured fromage frais. Really annoying, one day I'm going to lynch the manager about it.

purpleduck · 11/02/2008 20:47

YES!!!! looked for cottage cheese, and there was only the low fat variety

Its for my son - he's 8, and teeny

grrr!!!
