I was eating some, she seemed to love them. She liked puy lentils yesterday. I know they can't eat whole nuts until they are 5 but seeds likes sunflower or pumpkin?

I don't think seeds are a good idea at that age unless ground up. They are a choking hazard.

I'm sure a BLW weaning baby could eat them. Aren't they too small to be a choking hazard?

Shitemum · 08/02/2008 20:28

I give my 16 m them. They are very small so I don't see how she could choke on them. She nearly choked on a bit of stuck-together-with-honey oaty bit from my muesli this morning tho...

Aren't they about the same size as raisins? DS has been eating raisins since he could pick them up at 7 months.

I always thought they were slightly too pointy, and didn't give them until about 2 or so. Ds says they are MUCH too pointy and won't eat them

How could you choke on a sunflower seed? They are pretty small -- I certainly wasn't cutting food up into smaller-than-a-sunflower-seed pieces when DS was 15 months old. I can't see a problem.

I think one of the issues with choking is if the food is very hard

you could choke on a nut, for instance, much easier than you could choke on the same size piece of bread

I think seeds are probably small enough to be ok, but they are hard and will not melt or soften if being choked on (unlike eg a biscuit or a crisp), so I would exercise caution if giving them to your child
