Accidentally ate old Mayonnaise

Hi,

So, my cleaner/nanny helps out with pick up on a Tue and basic meal prep. Last week she made jacket potatoes and a homemade coleslaw. I ate it all, but no one else ate the coleslaw as neither kids or husband are big on mayo.
I felt slightly nauseous in the evening and the day after I checked the jar of mayo she used. She must have found it at the back of the fridge as I didn’t even know I had it and the use by date was Dec 2021! So well over a year out of date, and who knows how long it had been open before that! Think it’s safe to say that it’s been open for at least 18 months… for reference, it tasted fine I think.

Anyhow, I have survived, but I’m almost a week in and can’t properly shake the nausea. I’ve not been sick once, but I just don’t feel right… has anyone got any tips or ideas on how to get rid of the nausea? Have not spoken to gp or anything, could they help? Or a pharmacist?

I just thought from the beginning that I’d just wait it out, but it’s just not shifting…

And it’s not that I’m pregnant or anything, no risk of that before anyone mentions!

Please help!

I can't imagine that made you ill. If it tasted fine it wasn't a problem.

I accidentally ate old Mayo once.... I started being sick about 5-6 hours later, was sick a few more times overnight and felt dodgy the next day, then I was fine.

Nausea a week later isn’t likely to be the mayonnaise still tbh, not if you’ve not had anything else wrong.

Pregnancy test?

Thanks everyone, must be something else by the sounds of it… but def not pregnant so can’t be that.

Could it be rooted in anxiety over feeling ill or waiting to be ill rather than an actual physical thing? (which would have shown by now)

Don’t have fear of being ill, but obv don’t enjoy it. It’s just been a very strange one, as I don’t feel the nausea all the time, it comes and goes throughout the day. The other day I felt it when going to bed and kept me up for a few hours along with intermittent stomach cramps. My stools are still not quite right and this started within a few hours of eating the mayo along with cramps…

Just don’t know what it could be and don’t really feel like the GP will be able to do much either, but perhaps I need to involve them to get a stool sample sent of if not better by the end of the week… 🙄 Guess it could be completely unrelated to the mayo and just bad timing! 🙈

Sometimes you can ingest some bad bacteria, not enough to cause a major upset but enough to upset your gut for a few weeks. I would ask the GP to do a stool test if it's lingering, could be H pylori which can lead to stomach ulcers if untreated.

Otherwise, plenty of pre and probiotics

H Pylori is pretty common and I think it's just antibiotic tablets and it's gone
