I'm after some inspiration for something I can give my 6 year old after school but before he goes to Beavers. Needs to be quick but not pasta as usually has that for lunch! thanks

Beans on toast?
Sandwich & fruit?

There is so much emphasis on 'proper' hot cooked meals on Mumsnet ... in the real world surely people don't need that sort of food every single night. Don't overthink it.

Quesadilla and crudités. That was my go-to for years when we had a quick turnaround for Beavers or Cubs.

Snoopystick · 05/01/2023 20:47

Soup and a roll/toast
Cheese on toast
Hot sausage roll
Microwave pancake with Nutella and fruit

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 05/01/2023 20:52

Eggs of any description

ditherydotty · 05/01/2023 20:52

Omelette
Jacket spud, beans & cheese (I bake my own spuds in advance of activity evenings , cool then refrigerate so really quick)
Soup & bread, or egg & bacon butty
Pitta, hummus & vegetable sticks
Vegetable / chicken stir fry with ready cooked noodles
Sandwich, fruit & crisps

onmywayamarillo · 05/01/2023 20:54

Soft boiled eggs and soldiers 😀

watchfulwishes · 05/01/2023 20:54

French toast and beans/peas was very popular here. And cheap!

SnowAndIceLobelia · 05/01/2023 20:55

scrambled eggs on buttered toast. mmmmm.

SweepTheHalls · 05/01/2023 20:56

That's a Wednesday dinner in this house, fish finger wraps or chicken nugget wraps to be eaten while walking to Beavers as there is an 8 minute turn around between after school club collection and Beavers starting!

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 05/01/2023 21:02

Soup and cheesy crumpets
Ramen noodles, as long as you bulk cook the broth ahead of time. Throw in a couple of gyoza or a hard boiled egg
Beans on potato waffle
Precooked sausage, frozen mash and peas (gravy of course)
Omelette (if you can find enough eggs, they're worth more than hard drugs round here!)
Breville?

liveforsummer · 05/01/2023 21:06

How much time do you have? I often have to do food on the run - lots of suggestions already here like quesadillas or wraps with goujons or with filling from a previous meal (chilli, curry, fajita mix) baked, pitta bread pizzas along with cucumber/carrot sticks. If you've time at home then jacket potatoes out of the slow cooker so they are ready when you get home, cheese toasties with heated up soup, quiche, beans and micro baby potatoes. A quick fried rice dish

My go to quick/ easy dinners before Brownies are:

Quiche,
Noodles,
Omelette,
Cheese & Ham toastie (I cheat and melt it all in the microwave after putting the bread in the toaster),
Pizza,
Crackers, cheese, cucumber and grapes snacky plate,
Melted ham wraps,
Pizza wraps,
Pitta bread with filling of choice,
Toasted pitta and hummus dip,
But sometimes my little Brownie child just loves a big bowl of cereal like Rice Krispies or Weetabix!

kateandme · 07/01/2023 03:27

Bowl of cereal
Scrambled eggs
Fish fingers
Nuggets
Fish cake
Jacket and cheese and beans
Hoops on toast
Fried egg beans on toast
Cheese on toast
Wrap pizza
Puff pastry pizza style
Soldiers
Chicken couscous salad
Greek rice-rice feta tomatoes cucumbers red onion.
Creamy salmon and leeks on a toasted bagel

HerringBoneBlanket · 07/01/2023 08:39

Falafels and cous cous,.veggie sticks

mine love hummus in an egg cup with chopped apple and peppers and bread sticks

Dippy egg and soldiers or scrambled egg on toast or fried egg inside a toasted cheese bagel

A sort of eggy fried special rice with whatever I've got

Noodle salad/stir fry

We do a lot of this kind of stuff and basically a lot of vegetable sticks and apple slices get eaten...it can mostly be prepared and eaten quickly without too much temperature worry

Tinks15 · 08/01/2023 22:27

@liveforsummer i’ve not done jacket pots in the slow cooker before. Do you literally just sling them in as they are & they come out ok?

katesbushh · 11/01/2023 23:29

Nachos

Dippy eggs.

Leftovers. I tend to put a portion ofchilli, casserole etc away for quick out the house.

Beans on toast- I love this. Sometimes if I just have myself to feed this is my go to..so satisfying.

KilmordenCastle · 11/01/2023 23:36

Quick dinners in this house are beans/scrambled egg on toast or a cheese and ham toastie. Toastie being the favourite in real rush as its also quick to eat and portable.

Orders76 · 11/01/2023 23:58

Beans on toast with cheese
Beans and fish
spaghetti on toast with cheese
Eggs on toast with cheese

If he's not fussy eater toasted bread, avacado, feta and eggs is great. Bowl of quinoa in fridge to throw spoon over everything.
