Dessert for a crowd ideas - no cake tins or mixer

I’m staying in a holiday cottage with no cake tins, or a stand mixer mixer, in a few weeks. And i need a dessert idea for a crowd! There’s an oven, etc, and other utensils, but I just can’t whisk or bake in round tins!

Any suggestions? I don’t mind buying from the supermarket if I can’t think of anything to make, but I just never really love supermarket puddings…

Chocolate bread and butter pudding with cream or ice cream. You can make it the day before and it stretches quite well as it's very rich.

Pancakes with a range of toppings that people can select from (eg whipped cream, choc sauce, berries, bananas, lemon, sugar etc)

Chocolate mousse made in advance served with fresh berries.

Trifle if you have a glass pyrex dish (Nigella has a good chocolate trifle recipe if you want something slightly alternative).

Creme brulee

I also love NIgella's chocolate raspberry pavola which is a popular crowd pleaser.

Tart tatin?

Sliced fruit. Apples peaches or nectarines work well. Saute in a pan for a few minutes with sugar. The juice should make a fruity caramel. Chuck in a baking tray and cover with puff pastry. Bake until the pastry is cooked and flip.

This has to be the winner? Might make one myself as haven't for years Pear is my favourite!

Pear is a good shout too and will be excellent with the caramel. they really are quite simple and easy to do and look really impressive. You can arrange the fruit in patterns if you want to be fancy.

Just make sure to soften the fruit slightly especially the apples so they are good for eating once the pastry is done.

Eaton mess, deconstructed cheesecake, rocky road...
Can't you take whisk or hand mixer with you and a couple of tins or dishes?

Last cottage trip I did dessert. Made two choices.

Lemon trifle. Bought lemon drizzle soaked in limoncello. Later of bought lemon curd. Then homemade lemon posset. So easy to do. Topped with cream and silver balls

There was a freezer so I also did peach melba using those glorious bottled peaches. Good vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce that I made in advance. Served with bought amaretto biscuits. Dead easy. No oven needed.

Bread and butter pudding made with panettone

Do you live anywhere near a ‘Cook’ shop, or will you be travelling past one on the way to the cottage? Their desserts are amazing, and all are frozen, so would be very convenient for entertaining. Love all their various cheesecakes. They do large sizes for entertaining. Really delicious. If you have anyone gluten-free, the chocolate and raspberry roulade is fab.

  • a set cheesecake
  • buy a pre-made pastry case, fill with a tin of pre-made caramel from a tin, sprinkle a touch of salt on top then cover in melted chocolate for a salted caramel tart
  • pre made pastry case. Mix a tin of consensed milk, 2-3 passionfruit pulp and juice of 1-2 lemons. Add to case and bake lightly till set for a passionfruit tart
