I am looking for New Years Eve/Day food. 5 of us (3 - 20ish). Want nice things (because son and girlfriend not here that often) but nothing overly complicated or fussy. All ideas really welcome.

This tagine is delicious and the pomegranate makes it that bit special. It works really well if you cook it in advance because the flavours develop, and it freezes well too. Serve with couscous (which takes next to no time) or flatbreads or both! I’ve served it with slow cooked pulled lamb shoulder for the carnivores!

Other meals that I do for special occasions and easy dinner party catering:
Champagne and crayfish risotto (the alcohol cooks off, so it’s fine to give the dc!)
Truffle macaroni cheese
Seafood lasagne
Paella

We have a curry night, usually two curries, pakoras/bhajis, rice naan and chutneys etc NYE. Steak pie every NYD without fail, it's a Scottish tradition. In your situation I'd probably do your sons favourites as I bet he will miss them if he isn't around often. I know I always love my childhood favourites when I visit home 😊
