I had a sudden strong desire to make a big beautiful goulash and that has now spiralled into a Hungarian themed dinner party 😂

Venison casserole

caringcarer · 10/12/2022 22:40

A salmon cooked in lemon juice with lots of veg and baby potatoes.

Mosaic123 · 10/12/2022 22:41

A huge fish pie topped with mashed potatoes.

Does it need to follow any theme or any allergies? If not, you could do anything! I'd try to keep it simple if you are also doing a Christmas meal the following day.

  • Italian salad, a pasta of choice or lasagna and garlic bread
  • Moroccan tagine with cous cous and a salad
  • Thai green curry and rice
  • Pork or lamb chops with veg
  • Salmon tray bake
  • Chicken thigh tray bake

If you also need to provide dessert, I'd do something you can prep a day ahead. Jelly with fruit, choc/mint mousse, strudel (shop bought or home made) which is cooked on the day, crumble- again shop bought or made, but heated through on the day.

Seafood lasagne

BarrelOfOtters · 11/12/2022 06:08

I’d do a bakedfish, buttered new potatoes and salad or greens. Something lighter this time of year is lovely.

or a Thai set of curry…

NoDairyNoProblem · 11/12/2022 06:10

Love beef Wellington, the Gordon Ramsay recipe with mushrooms is my favourite.

mincepiepie · 11/12/2022 08:18

My friend did a side of salmon or maybe a whole salmon that was beautiful.

Daube of beef with Gruyère croutons is also good

Mexican would be nice too for NYE. Nachos and chili and home made accoutrements

Holidayqueen1 · 11/12/2022 08:40

Thanks everyone, some great ideas!
no real theme atm, that’s what I’m trying to figure….
ha re goulash and Hungarian theme, that sounds like me!
only thing I need to consider are mollusc and lamb allergies.
wondering about an Italian themed meal so Arancini/ anti pasta, then poss a light pasta dish followed by an Italian chicken casserole or something. Lentils will feature somewhere as apparently eaten for good luck on NYE. Dessert poss limoncello tiramisu.
I like the thought of this one as can prep in advance
OR a Middle Eastern feast as we’re going to Jordan next summer with the friends who are coming.

Yes if I do beef Wellington it will be the Gordon Ramsay one 😋

Slow cooked lamb kleftiko and potatoes, and all the Greek sides and dips... works perfectly for dinner parties and is relatively easy.
Plus tesco seem to selling lamb legs half off if you have a club card so you could get it now and freeze it.

warofthemonstertrucks · 11/12/2022 08:47

Oh. Just seen the lamb allergy so not that then!!

mincepiepie · 11/12/2022 08:57

I did some arancini in the air fryer last week if you have one. they were delicious! The recipe came with the airfryer

MrsKippling · 11/12/2022 12:13

I made this a few weeks ago and it was delicious and would go with the Italian theme you're going for.
Mary Berry's Tuscan chicken

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/12/2022 13:25

This Sicilian lemon pappardelle with nduja and crunchy crumb is delicious and not too heavy so could work as part of a 3 course meal.

Habibtihayatiii · 11/12/2022 13:48

Jordanian food you might like to make/offer in light of the upcoming trip you mentioned:

Mezze:
Houmous (or houmous fatteh for something a bit different and more warming for winter)
Muhammara
Moutaabel/Baba Ganoush
Falafel/Kibbe
Chicken livers with onions and sumac or in pomegranate molasses

Chicken ouzi (spiced chicken, diced vegetables and rice in individual dome shaped filo pastry parcels)
or
Maqloobeh (chicken/meat/veg and rice layered and turned out upside down onto a big platter)

Baklava
Muhalabia

They can ALL be prepared in advance and both the main courses, though fairly simple look impressive.

Happy to provide recipes if they're of interest.

We have a traditional Scottish Hogmanay Dinner.

Lentil soup
Homemade steak pie (puff pastry) with peas. mashed turnips and mashed potatoes
Clootie Dumpling and custard

Lines your stomach for all the alcohol

Holidayqueen1 · 11/12/2022 16:01

Thank you all! Love the lemon parpadelle recipe, could be a good pasta course!
