Ham for Christmas

AnythingConsidered · 10/12/2022 16:37

My dear mum used to make a ham/gammon joint for Christmas. I have such lovely fond memories of the amazing smells, deliciously tasty (especially warm) ham that we picked on, sneaked bites off and had at every meal for days!

We don't do the traditional Christmas Dinner but I would love to have fresh ham to pick on. HOWEVER, I'm not a very confident COOK so thought I ask mumsnet for any very easy/simple recipes/recommendations I could follow!

Nigella ham in coke! Dead easy, very tasty. Top to is to buy a foil tray for when you put it in the oven to save washing up!

I always used Delia Smith recipe. It’s always been great.

I'd second both Nigella and Delia recipes. I've done both and also the Cherry coke version of Nigella's. Absolutely delicious and the stock made amazing soup.
Protect your oven at all costs though - foil trays!!!

I do the Nigella one, but in cherry coke. Amazing. I'm not much of a cook, but even I can't wreck that.

Delia’s one with the cranberry sauce, oranges with cloves in it etc has been a family favourite for years. We have it with dauphinois potatoes. If you’re brave and have turkey then the ham goes well with leftover turkey in a pie.

Awesome, thank you so much.
Nigella in coke it is!

One question though, she mentions boiling the ham to reduce the salt, but she doesn't say how long for? Any clues? And would a supermarket ham need that?

Yes to nigella's ham in coke. Easy and tasty.

My butcher says most gammon isn't salty enough to need soaking or boiling to reduce the salt. I still soak it overnight then so it in the slow cooker with coke, then I glaze in the over.

DramaAlpaca · 10/12/2022 18:50

I always use Delia's recipe.

Thanks ladies for the recommendations, I went with Nigella and it worked a charm.

I did mine in my instant pot in cider and apple juice, then finished it off in my air fryer, so good
