Does anyone have a good recipe? Or do I just replace normal suet with the veggie version?

Mary Berry uses butter rather than suet - it is gorgeous, I make it every year.

Veggie suet and get creative with the dried fruit. Dried cherries, cranberries, apricots, prunes, dates, figs are all great substitutes for the rather gritty currants.

I’ve just made this for the twentieth year running. I got the recipe from The Times when it was still a broadsheet!

It’s gorgeous - people rave over it.

Thanks @DuncanBiscuits I have a glut of Bramleys from the garden so might give this a go.

I think my family use the Delia recipe with vegetarian suet.

DuncanBiscuits · 28/11/2022 09:03

Great! I’d definitely use the dried cranberries instead of raisins though. They’re what makes it.

I've always made Delia's mincemeat with vegetarian suet so that I don't have to make two lots.

CMOTDibbler · 28/11/2022 09:07

I make the same as Duncans recipe (though I was convinced it was a Delia one) but without cranberries as I don't really like them, but using chopped apricots instead. I like it, and my jars always sell out on the community christmas stall fwiw

I found (more or less accidentally) that just Bramley apples, sultanas, cinnamon and brown sugar simmered with minimal water make great mince pies! Wouldn't be suitable for jars or bakesales but handy if you run out at home.

The Times recipe looks very nice - might give that a try.

Thanks for all the suggestions Smile
