My toddler is lactose intolerant and allergic to tomatos. Please give me some meal ideas or recipes for what he can have that I can feed the whole family with.

Thank you.

risotto, curry, stronganoff, fish cakes, toad in the hole,

mmmmmchocolate · 26/11/2022 18:19

To replace the tomato sauce in recipes I used to make a “no tomato” sauce using jarred peppers- which they used to sell at Lidl- I assume they still have them. Tasted similar and not too much more expensive. Then I’d use the sauce for bolognaise, chilli, pizzas etc.

That's a great tip @mmmmmchocolate I'm going to do that.

@LeafHunter surely toad in the whole has milk and butter in with the potato. Fish cakes also normally have milk in them and/or cheese.

Roasted veg fritata
Mild curries with coconut milk base
Cottage pie (just make mash with dairy free butter)
Tuna and sweet potato fish cakes
Chicken and leek hot pot (base is in a thick chicken gravy)
Lemon and garlic butterflied chicken breasts with veg and potato wedges
Salmon, green veg and new potato tray bake

AtleastitsnotMonday · 26/11/2022 18:58

Fish cakes are easy to make dairy free, just replace butter with dairy free

Lcb123 · 26/11/2022 19:05

toad In the hole made with a non-dairy milk. Risotto with non-dairy cheese (lots of veg/meat options).
stir fries
any fish like a baked salmon fillet
curry using coconut milk for the sauce
make white sauce using non dairy butter and milk
puff pastry (the pre made rolled one is usually vegan) with chopped veg and vegan cheese then baked

newtb · 26/11/2022 19:09

Fish cakes, just fish, mash and parsley. No butter, no milk and no cheese.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 26/11/2022 19:37

Egg fried rice
Chicken casserole
Tuna burgers - I sub the butter for rapeseed oil
Chicken biryani
Fish tacos - sometimes I use Nigella’s recipe, sometimes I cheat!
Prawn pilaf
Mushroom stroganoff
Teriyaki chicken
Chicken traybake

Oat milk works well as a substitute imo. I make cheese sauce with oat milk, vegan cheese ( I use Applewood smoked, but Violife is also good) and plant based butter, with flour obviously. Good base for a pasta bake.

merryhouse · 26/11/2022 21:10

@Lcb123 risotto with cheese? what kind of deviant are you?

OP, I often make curry without any tomatoes. Risotto (without cheese, fgs). Stew, casserole, pie mix don't require tomatoes, and pastry/potatoes can be prepared with alternatives to dairy.

Chips and vegetables added to burgers/steaks/chops/fish fingers/

Potato wedges or roasted. Couscous. Tuna pasta salad (without toms). Full roast dinner. Stuffed hearts (we usually have mash, but S2 eats it with rice).

Today I've eaten bacon rolls (full disclosure - I put tomato on it, but not integral to the dish); and mackerel with parmentiere potato, roasted spiced cauliflower, and carrots.

I use lactose free milk for toad in the hole/yorks puds. And dairy free spread in mash, all good!

It works fine with dairy free milk, and you can add the same to potato or do fried potato, wedges, gratin etc.

Id make fish cakes with egg, potato, fish, seasoning and a bit of flour. I know shop bought ones usually have milk or cheese in, but tend to make my own as we needed gf and df for a while.

Lactose free Philadelphia groceries.asda.com/product/lactose-free-cheese/philadelphia-lactose-free-soft-cheese/1000189643664 makes a great risotto. I like this oven baked recipe

FluffyWorm · 27/11/2022 08:31

@LeafHunter thanks. I think I've been missing a trick by not really considering using dairy free ingredients. It seems obvious now! Thank you.

You can add Vitalite to mask instead of butter and use an alternative milk for toad in the hole/ Yorkshires. They just don't rise as well Wink

Verbena87 · 27/11/2022 08:36

Red lentil dal with rice and greens?

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/11/2022 13:09

*mash

We have this fish pie but add Vitalite or Pure to the potatoes instead of Quark.

Bimbil19 · 27/11/2022 13:27

Both my kids are allergic to cow's milk so I make all the usual things but with dairy free alternatives. The plant pioneers and flora plant butters are good, oatly does a creme fraiche, alpro a custard and elmlea have a plant based double cream. Lots of alternative cheeses (though quite honestly I'm yet to find one I actually like) and unsweetened alternative milks are okay for sauces. I think the tomato one is more difficult but some good suggestions by PPs!

BuryingAcorns · 27/11/2022 14:03

Tray bakes are nice. Chicken thighs with skins on, baked with chunks of sweet potato, shallots or chunky rings of leek and red peppers. Serve with peas.

Or kedgeree - rice with very mild curry spices, chunks of white fish (cod, haddock or hake) finely chopped parsley and peas with some eggs stirred in towards the end of the cooking.

My kids used to love 'pink fish with noodles' - fine egg noodles tossed in a small amount of soy and sweet shilli sauce, servewith baked, roast or fried salmon, baby corns, carrots and peas

Whataretheodds · 27/11/2022 20:32

You can use silken tofu for most things you'd usually add cream or cream cheese to.

Oat milk also works really well.

Thai and malaysian dishes /south indian or sri lankan curries with coconut milk.

Leek, mushroom and bacon risotto. Use oil instead of butter. If you can get nutritional yeast it's a DF substitute for parmesan.

Traybake of chicken pieces, chorizo and Mediterranean veg (courgette, aubergine, onion, garlic, peppers)
