Meat and cheese free canapes

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/10/2022 16:15

Most of my usual canapés have either a meat element, prawns, or cheese.

I need to cater for a group that includes someone that doesn't eat meat/fish and the same person also dislikes cheese in any form. There are also a couple of vegetarians, who do eat cheese so I will do some cheese options and will do some meat options too. But would like most of them to be acceptable to everyone to make it easier for me.

I could do things like hummus on cucumber, tapenade on little crackers, l'll have bowls of nuts, olives and crisps but would like to make a few trays of nice bites too.
What are your favourite meat and cheese free Canapés? Thanks

Ooh yes @SummaLuvin I love bhajis. Could also do falafel.

Cross posted @PutYourShoesOnWereLate ! Some lovely ideas there. The only mushroom pate I've ever made was with cream cheese. What can I use instead of cream cheese?

I always make these spiced sweet potato cakes, I fry them off ahead of time so they can just go on a baking tray in the oven to reheat when guests arrive.
Mini fritata squares made with red onion, peppers and mushrooms.
Breaded garlic mushrooms.
Mini bruschetta (don't add the topping too early or they go soggy).

Blinis with horseradish mayo and finely diced beetroot

Fivemoreminutes1 · 25/10/2022 18:08

Smashed avocado bruschetta
Devilled eggs
Vegetable spring rolls

Mushroom vol au vents. Still fabulous

I love a cucumber boat with pâté! Cut a chunk of cucumber, same length as your little finger. Cut in half lengthways and scrape the seeds out. Pipe or spread pâté of your choice into the cucumber…. Can be made smaller and with different types of pâté to suit dietary requirements

Nourishhhh vegan camembert is absolutely brilliant. Maybe that with some mini bruschetta toast and onion marmalade

Pseudonymminymie · 25/10/2022 21:14

I make vegan bean paste with vegan mayo. But you can also get vegan cream ' cheese ' which is really nice.

Pseudonymminymie · 25/10/2022 21:14

Paste ! I mean pate!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/10/2022 22:12

It's the taste of cheese with this particular guest. I do regularly cater for vegan guests and the Tesco vegan cream cheese is delicious. But this guest wouldn't agree!!

Mini Bruschetta, mashed Avo with chilli flakes on toast, vegan cheese and herb pizza rolls, sun dried tomato and olive tapenade on mini toast.

cushioncovers · 26/10/2022 03:49

I would have a look at vegan pate recipes online op. If you want to cheat I've bought different ones from Holland & Barrett before to take on holiday. They are in a tin.

cushioncovers · 26/10/2022 03:49

I meant to add I'm referring to the pate questions. Mushroom ones and vegetable ones.

cushioncovers · 26/10/2022 03:54

Vegan pesto
Olive tapenade
Sun dried tomato tapenade
Mashed avocado

These are all good to use instead. Also nutritional yeast has a nutty cheesy flavour.

JingsMahBucket · 26/10/2022 04:15

@RockingMyFiftiesNot Careful with the tapenades. Double check they don’t have anchovies in them as that’s a traditional ingredient.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 26/10/2022 07:23

Ooh good point @JingsMahBucket thank you.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
