It's been lurking in the cupboard for ages. Does anyone have a good recipe please?

I don't eat meat, and don't particularly want food to resemble meat either.

I'm having jackfruit for tea! In a stir-fry with noodles, broccoli, tofu and kimchi. Very tasty 😋

Do you just put the Jack fruit in? Or does it need any preparation?

Oh god I have flashbacks to my vegan phase Blush and it's also made me think of that tin of Tuno I once had Grin

I tried Jack Fruit pulled pork. It was grim.
Very very salty and a waste of other ingredients.

If you do use it (I'm in the bin it camp myself) make sure you rinse it properly.

Hardly a meat-substitute @ 2g of protein per 100g, when beef is c.26g !

CrispyTofu · 07/09/2022 18:14

@KateLumley I just drain it, squash it with the back of a fork and Chuck in it! It absorbs whatever herbs/spices you are using and tastes like that flavour. I sometimes marinade it for an hour or overnight and Chuck in a a salad too 😃

what the hell is Jack fruit I've never heard of it!

Pacca · 07/09/2022 18:22

Donate it to a food bank.

I had a jackfruit chilli pie recently and while jackfruit isn't for me, pastry can hide. a multitude of sins. The concept was good if jackfruit is your thing.

Tell it to hit the road and never come back no more, no more, no more, no more, no more.

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 07/09/2022 18:44

Throw it at your enemies?

limitededitionbarbie · 07/09/2022 18:45

I really don't like it I would bin it

ThickCutSteakChips · 07/09/2022 19:10

Jackfruit is one of those things that looks really nice, and the idea of it is great, but actually just tastes like shit.

Jackfruit 'pulled pork' is nothing like pulled pork in any way, it just looks like it on the plate. It's pretty gross tbh.

Tabbouleh · 07/09/2022 19:20

It tastes like shit to people who don't know how to cook it, I think. Just like pork would taste like shit if I cooked it ( because I never have).

Anyone had jackfruit chips ( crisps)?

Tirediam · 07/09/2022 19:24

Jackfruit curry is bloody lovely. No recipe though sorry OP I made it up as I went along.
I’ve had pulled “pork” jackfruit but made by someone else in a bbq sauce with slaw in a roll.
looks like I’m the only fan here … 🙈🙈😂

Tabbouleh · 07/09/2022 19:25

I make up my own recipes as well but there are a million curry recipes online

InsertPunHere · 07/09/2022 19:29

The trouble is we don’t know if you have unripe jackfruit in brine or ripe jackfruit in syrup.

The former is a useful ‘meat replacement’ when marinated in spices for tacos, biriyanis, other spicy main courses.

The latter is a sweet tropical fruit like mango or papaya.

Unfortunately many recipes in the U.K. don’t make it clear a jackfruit comes in both forms.

TrumpIsAnIdiot · 07/09/2022 19:29

Send it for Harvest festival

Crikeyalmighty · 07/09/2022 19:31

Vile stuff!!

Crikeyalmighty · 07/09/2022 19:35

Talking of revolting- (and whilst I'm not veggie I can appreciate nice veggie food) Waitrose have a mushroom stroganoff thing in their vegan range that truly tastes and smells like 3 week old unwashed socks of a bloke with a heavy manual job!! Utterly revolting.
