Yes. Always do it for vegan flapjacks

DelurkingAJ · 31/08/2022 12:50

Yes, recipient I use is:
225g margarine
225g Demerara sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
275g oats

It’s Mary Berry’s fast flapjacks.

SiobhanSharpe · 31/08/2022 12:51

Yes, unless you particularly like the flavour of honey in flapsjacks. (I don't.) Golden syrup is cheaper too.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 31/08/2022 12:52

Yes, golden syrup is the normal flapjack binding sugar. Never made one with honey before.

Genuine question - is honey vegan, then? I had always assumed it wasn't. If it is, what's the difference between using honey from bees and eggs from chickens? Because they make it, not produce it?

SoupDragon · 31/08/2022 13:17

Both honey and golden syrup work equally well in my experience.

I'm not sure which you are swapping out though 😂 It reads either way.

TeenDivided · 31/08/2022 13:18

Are people misinterpreting the question?
I was assuming the OP wants to use honey instead of the more standard golden syrup.
Honey can't be vegan surely (see Bee Movie).

LifeAintEasy · 31/08/2022 13:20

Yes you can use honey instead of golden syrup, they work fine but I don't think they are as sweet or chewy in my experience. When I'm making them for the kids I'd usually use honey.

I also think that's what she wants to do but it does sort of read either way.

Cotswoldmama · 31/08/2022 13:24

Honey isn't vegan I guess they got it the wrong way around!

Trethew · 31/08/2022 21:55

@JudgementalCentipede I assumed OP was asking if it was ok to use syrup instead of honey

StillWeRise · 31/08/2022 21:57

golden syrup is much better in flapjacks!
honey would be too sweet and overpowering

PotatoHammock · 31/08/2022 21:58

Honey isn't quite as sticky/chewy as syrup ime.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/08/2022 21:59

I would always go for the golden syrup,
Honey’s not vegan is it?

Knittedfairies · 31/08/2022 22:03

Another assuming OP is asking whether she can use honey instead of golden syrup. I wouldn't think so...

SoupDragon · 31/08/2022 22:54

You definitely can. I've done it when I had no syrup.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 01/09/2022 08:02

Thank you for all your messages. We had run out of syrup and the children wanted to make flapjacks.

It's the opposite of vegan

At best it's vegetarian and if he doesn't know that
He doesn't.
Vegans abstain from all things creatures and if they don't
They ain't vegan

I honestly don't care
That's why I'm not and I like milk
