I have a big house party coming up- about 50 people. Will be more about drinking then eating but would like to hand out done canapés but need to make-them in advance as I can’t be in the kitchen on the night. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Get some fancy mini bamboo skewers.
King prawn and piece of chorizo
Peach wrapped in Parma ham
Cherry tomato, mini mozzarella ball and basil
Cube of water melon, cube of feta, mint leaf
Baby potato or halved salad potato roasted with plenty of rock salt and black pepper skewered with a cocktail sausage cooked in honey and mustard.

Basically anything is better threaded on a stick!

Does it have to be proper canapés? Because if you are unable to be in the kitchen, I would go for snacks and nibbles like crisps, bread sticks, dips/pates, platters of cold meats and/or cheese and so on. Easy to do in advance, can still be lovely and doesn't require last minute ute assembling or cooking.

If it must be canapés, a few options might be:

Smoked salmon and creme fraiche on blinis (I always squeeze lemon juice and some black pepper over and sprinkle chopped capers).

Mini mozzarella balls wrapped in Parma ham (secured with a toothpick).

Ritz crackers (or similar) with chicken liver pate and a cornichon.

Pre made mini quiches (bite size).

For 50 people, you have to prepare a LOT of trays and plates of canapés. They take up quite a bit of space pre-party
(I had all my trays of NYE canapés laid out on my bedroom floor!), not to mention a lot of time. If you do decide to go down the canapé route, don’t make anything that has to be kept in the fridge: you won’t have room if you’re catering for 50 AND if you want to chill drinks beforehand.

I’d either do ‘nibbles’, as Pp suggested (open packets and fill up bowls of olives, nuts etc….) or a cheese and biscuit/bread table as pictured

Hi all, I tend to agree. The idea of canapés was more of an excuse to make my teenage DS’s go round and have to talk to people, we were already going to have a spread laid out on a table. As there are about 70 people expected now, I’m not sure I can face making that much fiddly food in advance! But am open to suggestions!

I would have thought handing out canapes would be the perfect excuse for your son not to talk to people. Can't stop to chat have food to give out.

Put the teenagers in charge of topping up drinks. We were always sent round with a bottle in each hand to top up and have short conversations along the way. At smaller gatherings we'd take "orders" for mixed drinks (and make them!). So I don't think canapés are necessary. And with 70 people, the effort and space is totally not worth it.

Love this, beautifully presented and have pinched a couple of ideas!

OP I think that is definitely the way to go. If you want more variety (the more people, the more dislikes/allergies etc) - Google grazing table for ideas. Not always well received on MN but I think they are fab

Oops quote didn't work, I was referring to @Fivemoreminutes1 photo.
