Are these going to make a comeback this winter?

Very cheap to make – basically flour, fat and sugar – and they do fill you up and keep you warm.

don’t they need to be boiled for hours?

UrsulaPandress · 26/08/2022 22:32

Sugar? Not in a traditional rag pudding.

If it’s sugar or meat, sugar’s cheaper.

My Mum used to make these, I think often when she was running short of money as cheap and filling as you say. We'd go blackberry picking and she'd make a diet pudding from it. My absolute favourite was a leek pudding. Am drooling thinking about it, must think about making one!

I microwave them - I usually do jam roly poly coiled into a Pyrex pudding basin then covered - about 3 mins on low (to let the raising agent work) then 2/3 on medium or high. Don't overcook though, they go tough.

I do my Christmas puddings in the slow cooker. It just takes a bit of preplanning but works a treat. I imagine a suet pudding would be the same.

The leek pudding sounds wonderful. I’m off to Google.

Suet puddings come out perfectly in the slow cooker. Best way to make them.

They also work well in the pressure cooker, though you have to remember to steam them without any pressure for the first half hour, as they cannot rise under pressure. After that you seal the cooker lid and bring it up to pressure.

Over my dead body. At school for dinner, they used to make a mince meat thing with suet on the top. It was white and glistened, like a big fat slug and was absolutely disgusting. They made me eat it, and I threw up.

SUET pudding, not sure where 'diet' came from, definitely not a pudding for anyone dieting!

How do you make steak and kidney suet pudding in the instant pot?

DiDonk · 10/12/2022 16:52

I do suet dumplings with mince. Kids love them, v easy and take 30 mins. Stretches the meat out nicely, but appreciate it does cost in oven time.

I do steak (sometimes with kidney) pud in the slow cooker. The result is better than any other method IMO
