Lack of Broccoli in the Shops

I'm guessing this is down to the droughts we've had in the UK and Europe. It was my one of staples. I have seen them in other stores, but they're half the size for about 80p - £1 which I can justify paying.

Broccoli tops and sprouting broccoli usually come in autumn, don't they? If so, I can't wait!

Have you tried frozen? As long as your not having it raw in a salad it’s fine, put the stalks in the water and the tops poking out with a lid on so they steam.

Nachtvlinder · 26/08/2022 22:04

No, I haven't thought of frozen. Are they really soggy when they are stir-fried?

Tesco haven't had frozen broccoli for weeks. And like you say the fresh broccoli is smaller/more expensive.
They are still selling a mix of broccoli/cauliflower for about 80p. My dc has asd and afrid and broccoli is a staple for her.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2022 22:25

Loads in Aldi as usual .

Perfectlystill · 26/08/2022 22:32

Loads in Lidl and M&S near me in London

CoffeeIsForClosers · 26/08/2022 22:41

This is our staple veg too. None in Lidl or Co-op lately. Got some frozen, working through that at the mo.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 26/08/2022 22:43

Loads in my local Tesco but only packaged not loose, and as they are small they are all two packed together.

Weeks? I haven't seen frozen in Tesco here for many months. Probably April I last got a bag.

Spaghag · 26/08/2022 22:51

Tesco is shocking for stock of lots of things. We primarily shop at Aldi & have no issues (broccoli is DD's favourite veg).

Morrisons also usually has things - but I did see McCain Home Fries for a fiver the other day. A fiver. For oven chips.

The broccoli shortage has affected frozen broccoli too.

Smartiepants79 · 26/08/2022 23:04

Our local Aldi has plenty yesterday!

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 27/08/2022 16:25

Sainsburys yesterday and tiny caulis with loads of brown spots selling for £1.50. There were a few very small, tired looking broccoli heads too. Kale and cabbages seemed fine though so I got them instead. Family not particularly happy but unavoidable.

Nachtvlinder · 28/08/2022 20:38

How strange it it is that it's stocked in other parts of the UK and not in others. Still no broccoli where I live (Nottingham)? I have looked for frozen broccoli which I found in Morrison's for £1.50. I'll rather hang on and find something cheaper elsewhere.

South Europe, lots of broccoli here still. But it’s never been as cheap as I see in the Uk. About €2.80 per head. Same for all veg, I can’t believe a whole 1kg of carrots costs 40p back ‘home’ . Now I don’t live there any more, I realise how cheap food was and still is, even with price rises.

APurpleSquirrel · 28/08/2022 20:42

Lots of broccoli here (SW) but definitely smaller - cauliflowers small too.

FixTheBone · 28/08/2022 20:45

Just another thing to get used to.

May as well start to adjust now, rather than going cold turkey when shortages really start to hit.

Verbena87 · 28/08/2022 20:48

We’re Derbyshire and our homegrown has been smallish and a bit sort of thin because of the hot/dry (also fucking decimated by fucking cabbage white fucking caterpillars, but that’s less likely to be an issue for commercial crops that get sprayed)

TenoringBehind · 29/08/2022 09:18

Must be very localised. We’re in the same area of the country as the OP and had no problems buying it at all. Its the only veg one of my children will eat without a fuss so we have it several times a week.
