Is brown sauce basically on the way out?

DH just ordered a sausage sandwich with brown sauce, and the waiter didn’t really know what it was.

It made me think: will brown sauce be extinct in a couple of generations?

… or is it like a sort of British balsamic vinegar, and will it go full artisanal?

Was it a waiter in the UK? Maybe they know it as HP sauce? I think Mayo has come in and quietly pushed brown sauce right off the edge of the table 🙁

Whitney168 · 22/08/2022 13:57

No, it's not (but I will have to stockpile HP if it ever is!!).😆

happystory · 22/08/2022 13:59

Agree Whitney!

Only ever ate brown sauce on a sausage sarnie and went veggie a fair few years ago. Wonder how many people will be the same?! What else do people possibly use it for?

ReeseWitherfork · 22/08/2022 14:02

In fact, just double checked your OP and it was even a sausage sarnie there too. So I’ll assume that’s the only purpose for it!

Housewife2010 · 22/08/2022 14:03

Definitely not, but I'd always ask for HP. It's the pinnacle of brown sauce and its spicy gorgeousness is a million times better than sweet ketchup.

Hoolahulahoop · 22/08/2022 14:04

My dh loves brown sauce ! On chops or sausages or burgers. It can't be on the way out surely 😉

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 22/08/2022 14:07

I was at a restaurant yesterday that served smoked ox tongue with house-made brown sauce, so the poncy revival may already be underway.

dryshampooer · 22/08/2022 14:11

Sausage/bacon sandwich unthinkable without brown sauce.

0blio · 22/08/2022 14:16

Yes, on sausage sandwiches and
Lorne sausage on a roll
Sausage Rolls
Bacon, egg, tomatoes, mushrooms etc
Steak pie
Scotch pehs pies
Mince and potatoes

All these wouldn't be the same without brown sauce. I don't buy HP as Aldi's is equally good imho.

But... you can use it on a veggie sausage sarnie! (Admittedly that is the only thing I use it for!)

Try it on macaroni (or cauliflower) cheese

I couldn’t get Daddies Sauce in our shop this week! I had a quiet panic.

… I bet it never goes off! (what colour would it go if it did?!).

longtompot · 22/08/2022 14:34

I have it on scrambled eggs

Juicesausagecake · 22/08/2022 14:34

Felicity Cloake wrote a book called ‘Red Sauce Brown Sauce’ and then said that she prefers mustard.

The profit margins must be enormous. It’s just apples, isn’t it?

Chips are naked without a healthy dose of HP along with the salt & vinegar.

Don't blame the mayo, I thing it's bbq sauce that's snatched Brown sauce's limelight!

But bbq sauce is gross and brown sauce is wonderful!

Particularly good in a toastie with cheese and corned beef. Come to think about it corned beef is another endangered species.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/08/2022 18:53

Sales ARE massively down. And the youth aren't taking to brown sauce much at all. Hot sauce has sort of filled that gap.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/08/2022 19:15

On Saturday I sold 32 bacon sandwiches and 64 sausage sandwiches at our local cricket club, ketchup was far more popular.

bigbadbarry · 22/08/2022 19:24

I was out for lunch today and when my friend asked for HP sauce the waiter looked briefly confused then asked whether she meant brown sauce 😀maybe it is regional

PlanetNormal · 22/08/2022 19:26

Not in my house, it’s not. A sausage cob without HP is not a sausage cob. And a cottage pie without a good dash of HP in the filling is a bland pie.

A win for the sausage sarnie though. FAR superior to bacon sarnies.

@soundsystem What sausages are you using? I’m yet to find any that replace them suitably in a breakfast sandwich. There’s some decent ones for BBQs but they’re all quite specifically flavoured. I don’t like fake meat but if a company managed to recreate a nice lincolnshire or Cumberland then I’d buy shares.
