What to do with a lot of plums

Workinghardeveryday · 06/08/2022 09:48

Just read the thread on apples, (great idea as we have a lot also), then got me thinking about our plum tree.

I have never seen so many plums. The tree itself seems to have grown huge this year and there must be x5 as many plums as normal. Climate change?! I don’t know.

anyway, I would really like to actually use them this year instead of picking them up from the ground and binning 😳.

any good ideas?

Jam or chutney

kikiterrific · 06/08/2022 09:50

I make lots of jam. Plum and gin is a favourite. I also eat them. And I stone and quarter them and freeze them. I have two Victoria plum trees.

Plum gin

rumred · 06/08/2022 09:51

Give them away. Lots of people appreciate getting fruit. I know i do...

Saisong · 06/08/2022 09:53

It won't use up many, but I love plum upside down cake!

Plum gin is another good idea

I believe they are pretty easy to freeze too.

Great ideas, thank you!

plum gin sounds the most fun…😂

I had the same issue, ended up with lots binned :(.
The one quick (well not quick but quickest) that I did was plum tarte tatin, it was lovely.

Plum and rum ripple ice cream www.abelandcole.co.uk/recipes/plum-rum-ripple-ice-cream?altmenu=cucumber

If you can't use them all, then get in touch with your local Womens Institute, they might want to come and collect them to make jam.

BirdWatch · 06/08/2022 10:17

Plum jam! My friend's mother used to make a German Strusel cake that was really good.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 06/08/2022 10:17

Cook them down with apples and blackberries, some cinnamon and sugar to form a compote. It can be frozen in portion sizes then defrosted and used to make crumbles, pies, cobblers. Warmed through and served with custard, cream or ice cream, or in porridge/overnight oats.

BirdWatch · 06/08/2022 10:18

German Strusel cake plum cake, that should be.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 06/08/2022 11:34

Plum sorbet! Uses more than ice cream and so delicious! You can also prep and freeze them (so half and destone) and use them for crumbles/tarts/pies/compote/whatever throughout the year. Also plum gin, yummy! I did cherry gin this year and it's so good. As are those delicious little gin soaked cherries...mmmm

Burgerqueenbee · 06/08/2022 11:44

Plum crumble is a favourite for our household.
Food banks often take fresh fruit and veg.

Bobbybobbins · 06/08/2022 11:52

Oh wow this thread has made me want some plums!!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/08/2022 11:54

If they are Victoria plums I will eat them all for you. Literally any amount.

Bonheurdupasse · 06/08/2022 13:14

Hi @canihaveacoffeeplease so delighted to see your post!
As above, I have this problem, and last year had to bin lots - as I didn't have enough time most days to prep them, and make the tarte tatin after work...So I can halve, destone and freeze them then use them for tarte tatin? Do you know how long they'll keep frozen for and still be usable? And does this work for apples?

Plum jam for definite (and give it out to all your friends and family!) - this recipe is great domesticgothess.com/blog/2015/07/23/plum-and-amaretto-jam/

Geneticsbunny · 06/08/2022 18:13

James Martin's spicy plum crumble. It is amazing.

TheCanyon · 06/08/2022 18:23

Our neighbour gave us two big bags during lock down 1. None of us even like plums! He gave us a recipe for some polish drink, think it was plums and sherry and maybe vodka? God knows but it was lethal

Workinghardeveryday · 08/08/2022 15:46

Just looked and plums are already ripe! So early this year. Over a month to normal.

if I make jam now will it be okay for Christmas presents? Do I keep in fridge?

plum vodka sounds right up my street, off to google that for sure!!
