various herbs and spices all in the house (and chickpeas are currently soaking waiting for me to boil them this afternoon so they must be included in the recipe).

I can pop to the local corner shop which sells a small variety of veg (peppers, mushrooms etc this afternoon.

What shall I cook????

Was thinking chickpea curry - but all the recipes I've found basically just the chickpeas, and spices - but I need to add extra stuff to bulk it out......

Chickpea soup?

casserole/stew served with mash?

Dice carrots, onions and celery and cook til soft in some oil. Add any other hardish ved you want eg peppers, courgette etc and fry up for a minut. Add some stock and the chickpeas and any other bits you have eg mushrooms, left over meat (if not a veggie), some lentils (the sort that don't need soaking). Then chuck in a tin of tomatoes, season and cook until reduced to the consistency you want. I season with a bay leaf, fresh basil and parsley, dried oregano, tabasco and anything else I fancy at the time.

Very nice with cous cous or just in a bowl with crusty bread. Sometimes I chuck in some barts ras el-hanout spice mix for a moroccony flavour and some lemon juice

Is great with sliced cabanos or chorizo too

Furball - that sounds nice too - but local shop doesn't have much of the stuff I need

TooTicky · 18/01/2008 13:30

Have you got dried apricots? Tomatoes, onion, chickpeas, apricots, cumin...yum
With any grain.

lucy5 · 18/01/2008 13:31

I also Chorizo and bean stew, will write the recipe out if it of interest.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 18/01/2008 13:32

no dried apricots.......

while you're all at it giving me great ideas with my chickpeas (going to use CD's recipe as it means I don't have to spend any more money to make it)

What can I do with green lentils??? (with any cheap ingredients - not restricted to what I've mentioned above LOL).

Green lentil bung in (if they are non-soak) as they thicken the liquid well

I don't have a recipe per se I just lob in whatever I have

It takes me 10 mins as I have a pressure cooker!

Usually I use a 10 bean mix too

Ok- this may be too late but hopefully may be useful for the future, if you like it...

You need:

1 large onion, finely chopped
1 lbs or 1/2 kg diced braising steak
1 lbs or 1/2 kg diced potatoes
2 diced carrots
1 spoon tomatoes puree
salt, pepper

Cook onions for about 5-6 mins in a bit of olive oil. Next add diced braising steak or whatever you use for a casserole. Brown the meat without adding any water for a few minutes, add a spoonful of tomatoe puree or a can of chopped tomatoes, and cook in low-medium heat until the meat is very tender. You may need to add a bit of water if the meat doesn't give off too much juice. (I normally use braising steak and cook about and hour). When the meat is cooked add diced potatoes and carrots to it, and pour just enough boiling water to cover everything in the pot. Season with salt and pepper (although you can at this stage add your favourite curry to it) Cook until potatoes and carrots are cooked.

Oooppss forgot the chickpeas... if you have boiled them and if they are nice and soft add them to the pot in the last 10 minutes of cooking!!!!!!!!!!
