Show-stopping beef recipe for a dinner party cooked on top of the stove

Hi MN. My oven isn't working, but my hot plates are. I've got 10 guests for supper tonight. I'm wanting to find a beef recipe that I can make on the stove stop. Any suggestions for me please ? DH doesn't like stroganoff, so that's out.

TIA

Peel some shallots, fry up some bacon lardons, pour in a bottle of decent red wine and simmer away for a few hours. Chuck some mushrooms in half way through.

Got a slow cooker?

I love beef bourguignon, but I also add a little beef stock to mine. Goes great with mash which is done on the stove too.

Have you got a barbecue or large griddle pan? Tomahawk steak or single rib joints. Marinate in fridge. Take out half an hour before you're ready to cook. Grill on barbecue or griddle. Rest 15 mins covered in foil then slice down the meat. Serve with salads including something with pasta/grains.

Delia's beef bourguignon is simple and delicious

Was coming on to say Boeuf Bourg too. Sooo good. Serve with mash and peas but I’ve also done it in big bowls with crusty bread and a glass of something red and delicious. So hungry right now!

Thanks so much ! I knew MN wouldn't fail me!

Serve with new potatoes tossed in french dressing, scattered with crispy bacon and chopped coriander and salt and pepper.

Is boeuf bourguignon really a 'show-stopper' though?
It's lovely cold weather comfort food, something I cook regularly with all the right ingredients (lardons, shallots, button mushrooms etc etc) and I would be happy to eat it at a dinner party too but it's not extra-special, IMO.
I think I'd go with the single rib beef joints barbecued or griddled but that's still a lot of last minute work for 10 people.
Or in this weather, perhaps a whole fillet (or two) cooked on the barbie or griddle pan as above earlier in the day, cooled, sliced and served on a platter covered with watercress, accompanied by a good mustard mayo, horseradish and other sauces you like and some lovely salads.

ShadowoftheFall · 23/06/2022 11:04

Definitely the the whole beef fillet. Beef bourguinon isn’t really special for a dinner party

purplecorkheart · 23/06/2022 11:13

i would do a really good Beef Bourguinon rather than beef joint or fillet. I agree that they would be more showstopping however people can be funny about how they like their beef cooked (most of my family like their meat blue but some like it nearer to well done).

Google recipes for Greek Cypriot dish Beef Stifado - gorgeous - very boozy rich beef onion and tomato stove top casserole. Traditionally done in clay pot in garden but stovetop version delicious and you just leave it cooking low for hours and flavours are amazing. Good with rice.
Starter could be lounza and halloumi done in frying pan and pre prepared green salad or onion and tomato.

Ooo so many choices, thank you ! I'm not in the UK, it's cold where I am. So hearty is good.

I love the beef carbonnade from Great Brithlish Chefs... it's not a showstopper on elegance but so tasty

fitflopqueen · 23/06/2022 15:01

I have made this for a dinner party of 11 - tripled the quantities and everyone loved it www.you.co.uk/fast-800-recipes-beef-rendang - just add sides rice & greens

fitflopqueen · 23/06/2022 15:02

forgot - can cook on hob only, watch it doesn't catch.

Braised beef ribs in a tomatoes ragu type sauce served with pasta. Yummy.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/06/2022 15:33

Yes , agree braised short ribs, either bourguignon or ragu style (or red-cooked in soy sauce and chinese 5-spice) are a bit different and usually go down very well.
If i do them in an Italian tomato ragu I serve them with polenta with lots of cheese in - parmesan and gruyère or similar - (plus extra for people to add at the table.).
And it only needs a nice crisp green salad due to all the vegetables in the ragu.
