Thermos

Dug out the old thermos to start taking coffee to work , trying to save a few pennies. But the outside of it feels warm when full?! That means it's not working properly right? I'm sure it used to feel cool outside no matter what was in it. I've had a quick google but can't really find anything that conclusively confirms. It's not boiling hot but is quite warm.

It means it’s not insulating perfectly, but that might not be a deal breaker for you. If you have a thermometer you could add boiling water and check on it (though every time you open, temperature will drop so might be worth testing after one hour, reset and test after two hours).

Even if the thermos isn’t perfect, it might not be dealbreaker if you don’t drink your coffee kettle hot. Most people prefer to drink their coffee at 60°C, so cooling in the thermos might end up a benefit.

If you fill it with boiling water for a moment, then empty it before using, it will keep things hotter.

As it just coffee you are using it for I’d say it fine.

Thanks everyone. I took it to work but unfortunately by mid morning, when I came to drink it, it was pretty cold! Looks like I need to invest in a new thermos.

Get a chilli's bottle. Honestly hot for at least 12 hours.
